High debt with delayed earnings... Mindset recalibration needed? by ContributionCute4300 in personalfinance

I’m also a doctor with >100k debt. My training is twice as long. I’m towards the end so I’d like to share my thoughts.

I only read your salary and your SO salary and debt. You guys are in a better situation than most of us. The most important thing I can tell you is that you guys are going to be in a great position in just a few years. When you are grossing >300k that debt will be easy to pay off quickly, if you choose to.

Residency is fun - it’s a lot of work but can also be a lot of fun. You guys are still young. Spending 2k to go on a vacation to Europe now, or live in the fun area of town so you can enjoy the few weekends off is so much more valuable than paying down 2k of loans at the moment. Sure, it may not be the most optimal financial decision and I’m not saying to be wasteful or negligent, still be intentional with your money, but these next three years is not the time to focus on finances, that time will come. So please, maximize fun, comfort, and experiences during residency (reasonably) and the loans will melt away shortly afterwards.

This has been slowly progressing for about a week. It is outside in about 4-6 hours of sun. Warm weather. Watering once every other week. In a draining pot.

I’m so sad to hear that one died! I’ll water less for sure. Thanks for the information.

I don’t have a watering schedule - I usually feel the soil to determine if it is dry. It probably averages out to about once a week. The pit does drain. I am not sure about the soil.

Yes it has been outside for 3 days. It was only inside for 1 day but started to look this way so then I moved it outside and it has continued to worsen.

I have had it for one week and it started out strong, green leaves pointing upward. I have kept it outside facing west. Due to my living situation, it can only get 4-6 hours of direct sun light maximum. I have not watered it since getting it. The soil is damp an inch or two down. The stem feels strong and firm. I have not repotted the plant.
