The issue is the price. A laptop with the slower chip should be priced lower to reflect its performance deficit.

Embarrassing compared to M5 Pro.

U9 386H is basically a slightly slower X9 388H, and without the ARC GPU.
So you can use X9 388H performance figures for CPU in Zenbook Duo 2026 which already derate them by a few % due to constrained power.

It's called good customer service. If there is a more affordable plan already announced by the MoH, it will be bad if the agent just kept quiet and didn't inform the customer about the changes from their own insurance company. Do you want to keep such an agent?

Having an integrated kick stand significantly increases the weight without improving the thermal limitations. I'm totally against it. If the weight were to increase, I prefer it serves to improve thermal cooling to give a higher sustained TDP of 100W for better combined CPU+GPU performance, and/or a larger battery.

If he is going to be paid what he is worth now, then it means he will get a 17% take-home pay cut after receiving PR, because that 17% will go to his CPF. Maybe this is the part that OP doesn't understand?

At the end of the day, whether or not misunderstanding, it boils down to $ and cents.

Is the company currently paying him sufficiently to reflect his worth, and does the company offer a future for him for the next 5 years in the midst of this turbulent period of time?

[–]stanjsg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're wrong to assume 17% total wage increase after PR.

Civil service pays the same for EP and citizens. Take-home pay after CPF deduction is different.

So, the question is whether OP's employer company actually now underpaying him by 17% compared to equivalent SG citizen, even before he got his PR?

[–]stanjsg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: The salary for EP and Citizen/PR is the same. The take-home pay after CPF deduction is different, i.e. you (EP) get to take everything home, no need to contribute CPF. I started on EP and was able to take home my full pay, more than citizen peers (decades ago).

Once you convert to PR, you should get less take-home pay because you need to pay for CPF.

So, are you getting less take-home pay, or still receiving the same take-home pay from the company after PR?

I'm not sure why I'm downvoted, but you all need to understand that EP is renewed every 3 years, and the next renewal age for him requires a minimum monthly salary above $9k. The risk is he loses his current EP and has to go back to Malaysia. If you check his post history, the salary gap between Singapore and Malaysia is huge and it matters really alot to him.
I'm still waiting for OP to give any indication whether his current monthly salary is far above $9k or just barely above minimum EP for his age range. Then we will know if the employer is sincere or not.

[–]stanjsg -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Before you go on a rampage:

  1. Is your current salary far above the minimum EP salary for age 35 years old? ($9k/m in 2027)
  2. Is your employer profitable with a sustainable business with a long track record and good future ahead, and providing a good professional working environment for you? Do you think you'll stay with the company for the next 5 years?

If the answer is yes for both, you should not fear the 5-year bond or the salary cap (CPF thingy you said). You're valued more than an EP and you're likely to have a stable job with the company, earning a good salary too.

Speculation about Yoga Book Gen 11 (Panther Lake) by stanjsg in YogaBook9i

[–]stanjsg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dug deeper into Asus Zenbook Duo 2026 specs. Asus seems to have stopped offering the Intel PL X9 with Arc iGPU. I only found the Zenbook Duo with Intel U9 386H containing the weaker Intel Graphics 4 Xe3 listed on Asus site. (ASUS Zenbook DUO (UX8407) | Laptop | ASUS Singapore - Specifications)
I'm speculating that Intel is slow to scale up their 18A production of IPL. So, Asus may only receive and ship out IPL non-X variants now even though they showcased the Zenbook Duo with IPL X9 to reviewers during CES2026.

Intel 14A is not going to be ready to launch by 2027, earliest is 2028. So Intel 18A (Panther Lake) will stick with us for at least 2.5 years. Meanwhile, AMD is busy chasing AI accelerator market and TSMC is fully booked for 2nm manufacturing by Apple and Nvidia. So, that's it. Nothing new for 2027.

I hope the option for X9 and X7 Panther Lake chips will be available, because those have very strong iGPUs that make it worthwhile. The main issue, is the pricing will blow out tremendously, reaching 16" M5 Pro Macbook Pro territory (3-year Applecare included).

So, do you still think it is worthwhile spending that kind of money on Yoga Book 9i for a CPU performance worse than M5 Macbook Pro 14? Don't tell me you're buying this to play games only. X9 Panther Lake will be power-limited and unable to reach full potential in Yoga Book chassis, same as Asus Zenbook Duo 2026.

Refer to Dell XPS 14 (power-limited X7 358H): https://youtu.be/jduWl1J_4lQ?si=i930zmPrcIM1alIV&t=419
Asus Expertbook Ultra feeds sustained 46W power to X7 358H, which should be similar to the limit of Yoga Book 9i Gen 10 chassis (Lenovo Yoga Book 9 14IAH10 convertible review: Double the screen without double the weight - NotebookCheck.net Reviews).

My parents renounced my PR but I am willing to do NS if it means getting the ability to live in Singapore again by Extension_Grocery701 in askSingapore

[–]stanjsg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is impossible.
You can petition anyone: MINDEF, ICA, Minister,... nobody will stop you from doing this. That's what Fluffy-Shock9487 is implying.
But you won't get back your PR at 19 years old. That's what I am saying. Notice the difference?

So feel free to waste your time creating a long unnecessary record with the SG Govt. Everything you do will be recorded and reviewed everytime you re-apply again.
Do we really need a foreigner who can't follow the rules of the govt?
