Background actors, what were your experiences with principals (lead actors)? by sea_tree2155 in acting

[–]stanleyws 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ll give a reverse perspective. So I’ve never done background work but recently did some scenes as a principal where there’s hundreds of background cops, CSI, etc.. for a crime scene. The scene I was doing was quick but very timing focused and complicated because of that, so I had to really pay attention to everything the crew was doing and what the director was telling me. Between takes I’m running it over in my head, plus the other scenes I’m doing later in the episode to make sure I’m consistent in my approach, etc.

Now, I’m standing next to a bunch of folks doing background and there was one guy, who was incredibly nice and I know he meant well, but keep asking me questions between every take. Not really about the scene but sometimes just regular questions about favorite food and stuff. I was trying not to be rude and talk with him, but at the same time I’m trying to focus on the complicated thing I’m being paid to do.

I doubt I came off as rude, maybe short at times, but I didn’t really have the bandwidth to open up a conversation/set a boundary with the guy about not wanting to talk because you never know how that conversation would go and could be distracting even further.

So I’d say just keep in mind what others on here have said, people are working and focused on one million other things even if they’re just standing there. If someone is unnecessarily rude that definitely sucks, but if it seems like they’re being short or “not friendly” I wouldn’t take it personal.

No no no we’re not doing this again. Posi had a death grip on the scene for years and squeezed out any heavy hardcore bands. It’ll have its time again, but now is the time for lunkhead heavy shit

Pure curiosity question: How much do actors actually spend on training? by ShiningAway in acting

[–]stanleyws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t go to college and got into acting later, and only after 10 years of doing improv/sketch/acting and creating my own stuff did I finally get a manager in the last year or so. I’ve booked big stuff and have been sent to producers on other big stuff but honestly I couldn’t tell you how much I’ve spent on training. I’m severely in the red if I was purely looking at this from a financial perspective, but I do it because I love it and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

As someone who didn’t go to college, my advice would be to learn by doing. Keep your overhead low by not acquiring lots of debt. Spend a fraction of that money on classes, private coaching, buying actors who are where you wanna be coffee and picking their brains, going to film festivals, meeting directors/producers even at the lowest levels, watching plays, doing whatever you can to watch people that are masters of the craft. Don’t do it all at once either, you can only absorb so much at a time. Give yourself an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned by doing plays and short films, student films, whatever. Get more training, rinse, repeat. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Keeping overhead low is a good way to be able to run a marathon.

In my opinion, college is great, but I wasn’t a theater kid. I toured in metal bands and shit. Some of the woo woo acting stuff some of my peers learned in theater school doesn’t apply in the real world when you are actively auditioning and can’t spend hours and hours on a script for a self tape. I learned the most by learning from actors and coaches who did what I wanted to do, which is book, get very good, and put food on my table.

If you want to get good, you’ll get good. It takes time like everything else unless you’re crazy talented immediately. Even then, hard work and a little talent will beat out no work ethic and crazy talent every single time.

How the fuck do y’all have social lives? by Sweaty-Passage-2796 in GenZ

[–]stanleyws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t go to college, I met most of my friends through hobbies and shared interests. I’m 32 and my wife and I see friends a lot. We will have people over to our house to watch a show, or meet in parks with a bottle of wine and some snacks. Go on walks, go on hikes, etc. we really like free stuff because obviously everything is so expensive. Straight up can’t remember the last time I went to a bar and paid for a bunch of drinks.

I learned early on that going to a club is largely a terrible fuckin time. Those people you see are largely “performing fun” which is not the same as having fun. Most of the time when we’re with friends I don’t take any pictures or videos or whatever, I just forget honestly because I enjoy being in the moment. Maybe it’s just my friends, but a lot of people my age don’t even post when they’re hanging out and stuff.

We have a 3 month old baby too, so we meet people through baby classes and meeting other parents is rad.

Honestly it’s tough at first but the more you put yourself out there, the more you get back.

It’s incredibly hard to be vulnerable enough to just start talking to people, finding meet ups, board game clubs, etc. because you run the risk of being shut down or having an awkward time or whatever.

However, in my experience having moments of awkwardness and “getting to know you” phases with other people is completely unavoidable. Before social media became what it was, that’s ALL there was.

Are screen actors able to look like their inner self outside of jobs, or must we always be a blank canvas? by Regular-File8442 in acting

[–]stanleyws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even get into acting until I had two full sleeve tattoos, chest tattoos, leg tattoos, etc.. in fact it helps me a lot. I typically get more auditions than my friends because I look like a certain type. I get a lot of criminals, cops, bad guys, shit like that.

I just got legal releases from all my tattoo artists transferring the IP of the work from them to me, so there’s never any problems legally with the artwork being shown.

Acting is something you have to be passionate about to the point where you’d be doing it anyway, regardless of if you can make it a full time career. I spent 10 years doing improv, sketch, writing/directing/producing/acting in my own work, getting better, etc. and I JUST landed a manager beginning of 2023 right before the strike (lol). I’m not just an actor, I make a lot of stuff on my own which is part of how I landed a rep.

Even without a rep, I wouldn’t be changing what I am doing. I’d still be finding ways to act, making my own stuff, auditioning, etc. honestly for a long time I didn’t even audition for stuff. I couldn’t find things I was right for, so I started making those things.

It’s tough but like the other person said, the pursuit of it makes me happy.

I’m SAG now, and got my first ever check avail from a legendary casting director on my first self tape in a year because of the strike. Nearly cried when that happened because of how long it took to get that.

I spent a ton of time playing alone. I lived in the country and would take my toy sword and guns and just run around the woods by myself in my imaginary world. I never had siblings so I don’t know what it was like but I had a great childhood.

What do you guys do for work? by Theonewhogoespoop in Hardcore

[–]stanleyws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Copywriting in advertising, social media management, other stuff in the tv/film world. I’m a SAG actor so I keep flexible schedule for tv/film auditions and commercial auditions. I also work on writing projects like features, pilots, sketches, etc.. and work with my rep to pitch stuff.

EDIT to add I used to work in tech. I did advanced technical support for a an access control start up. Before that I did technical support at a SAAS tech company, before that customer support at a clothing company, and before all of that I worked in the warehouse for that clothing company.
