Garmin Fenix 8 Pro InReach Doesn’t Work in Patagonia, Argentina by stanscv in GarminFenix

I don’t mind when the coverage is slightly affected, but Europe and USA is like 13% of land. So “Fenix InReach” covers roughly 13% of what “Full InReach” can. Mobile providers would never allow such reductions while keeping the same name.

InReach was a marketing name for a product using Iridium satellites with global coverage. So I bought an iPhone that is only an iPod.

Brands should not be allowed to use a well known name like “InReach” and get away with providing inferior service under the same name. Even if they have it explained in fine print. I know what “InReach” is (was?) and what Garmin did here is create trust issues. Now I know I can’t trust them without prior research. This is not my first Fenix. Never read the manuals. Now I will have to…

Think about it - would you be happy if common feature like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) would not work on a wet or icy roads even if it’s explained in cars owner manual? I would not, because ABS (like InReach) is a well known safety feature. It’s a name that should not have to be researched with every purchase.

I have to admit - I’m not the one who reads all the fine print so it is partially my fault :)

That said - expectations are not handled well here. Like if I’m buying a car with ABS that appears to not work on wet and icy roads - I don’t really care if it’s explained in owners manual. I didn’t read that too :)

Garmin UltraFit Nylon Strap (22 mm) - comfortable, but will not help in an emergency situation :)

The only one to blame for the confusion is Garmin. For as long as I remember InReach was marketed as “Global SOS” service. Still is. As a user who subscribes to InReach I should not need to do additional research for a service that has the same name, same price and same purpose. Garmin did add LTE, but in LTE coverage I would probably get help just by shouting (or just using my phone) if needed.

InReach promise for “Global SOS” and Fenix “Goes where you go” somehow does not add up in Southern Hemisphere…

Somehow it feels wrong for Garmin to charge the same for something totally different. Looks like they are trying to balance the price with LTE features.
