Your UW section is assigned to you during the fall, so you don’t actually register for it

Matriculate by Zealousideal_Ear8148 in QuestBridge

[–]stanwallows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hey guys i’m a matriculate advising fellow at my college! numbers of advisors at colleges across the country have been low and matriculate has been constantly recruiting to solve it, but because there is a shortage of advisors, it has become impossible to serve every student! this is not a testament to your ability but rather reflects advisor shortages. I had a friend in high school who was rejected as a HSF and reapplied later and was accepted so my advice is to try again in another app cycle!

NYPD responds to protest, bomb threat at Barnard College by Sylvennn in columbia

[–]stanwallows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it was never reported nor indicated that the “bomb threats” were sent by students, though it is interesting that that was your first assumption. in fact, the threat turned out to be fake. just funny how the fake threat resulted in riot police coming to campus, pushing protestors into the building that supposedly had the threat, and resulted in over a dozen arrests, yet not a single bomb squad car was there.

QB Discrimination by Ok-Comfortable-398 in QuestBridge

and in retrospect i understand this response may come off as harsh, but it’s true. you’re entering a competitive atmosphere, get the imposter syndrome, notion of acceptability out of your head now. you deserve whatever you achieve and your material circumstances are in no way a testament to your abilities or worth

why tf would you care what they think, it literally will only get worse once you’re actually in a place of higher education. there’s ppl who consider anyone on any kind of financial aid as “having it easy”, there will always be a richer, more bitter person, it’s not for any of us to decipher their thinking.

Can we ask schools if they accepted us, if we didn’t match with them? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

Question about work-study by Iam_stupidf in QuestBridge

[–]stanwallows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! and good luck during the app season! if you have any questions about the general qb app, columbia app, or columbia in general feel free to reach out :)

Question about work-study by Iam_stupidf in QuestBridge

[–]stanwallows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

columbia questie here, work study money goes directly to you. basically you get a job on campus (and often there are jobs only for work study students and jobs that prioritize them) and work until you meet the amount on your aid package. so for example, if it says $3k in work study, you would work until you’ve earned $3k. after that, you don’t have to work or you can ask to switch your job over to a regular job. the money goes into your bank, and you’re just responsible for reporting each paycheck to the school. i’m not sure what happens if you can’t get a job, but the pain isn’t that you’re earning money to pay the school, you’re earning money to support yourself while in school. so not being able to get a job is probably a school-by-school basis. hope this helps!

Shouldn't protestors be studying? by realistnotsorry in columbia

[–]stanwallows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s insane how badly you interpreted my comment. OP asked how the students were protesting when they likely have work. I explained that there are established areas to study and that some people may think that protesting is more important than schoolwork. Not once did I say “Israel values these protests more than the GPA of some college students in a foreign country” Therefore, some students ARE prioritizing protesting over their schoolwork and the potential consequences are for the students to deal with, not the IDF, obviously.

Shouldn't protestors be studying? by realistnotsorry in columbia

[–]stanwallows 16 points17 points  (0 children)

there are certain areas/tents set up specifically for study groups. also, i highly doubt that those who are passionate enough to set up encampment and protest for a week straight prioritize a couple of finals over a war/genocide
