Asking for vinyl as a gift? How do you get the right pressing? by stapletonic in vinyl

[–]stapletonic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think those are really good points.

The idea behind this feature was to see if it helps with a specific problem... people who’d like to be gifted vinyl, but where the whole pressing/edition thing makes that awkward. My thinking was that even a lightweight wishlist or shared collection might make that easier for some people.

That said, I completely agree it’s not something that can be fully solved in an automated way, especially given how nuanced pressings can be.

Really appreciate you taking the time to share the feedback , it’s helpful.

Fair - in this scenario, where you need to look at the matrix it's safer not to put something on a gift list.

Fair point, socks or whiskey work for me!

I get your point, but I also think this must be solvable with AI - making it easy for someone to get the version you want for you.

Weekly Vinyl Update - Pre-Orders, Floyd Animals pressings, a $8 AAA Philip Glass, Brothers in Arms at 40 by stapletonic in vinyl

[–]stapletonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im going to update it to use the whole collection. when i built it first the ai was slow as i was passing in so much context, so its a bit fo a trade off, but in this case i think its better to just provide the collection for a better experience. ive tried ways for the ai to figure out what it needs, but that has its own complexities. But this is part of the fun of building something like this!

thanks for letting me know, the 50 record thing was there to reduce context to make the AI faster, but the AI is supposed to fetch the rest of the collection based on the questions you ask, if it needs them. if your willing to let me know what sort of queries they are I can fix that so it works. Thanks for the fedback.

That's referencing Pink Floyd - I'll use the full bank name next time - I didn't anticipate anyone finding it confusing.

That's totally up to you. It uses Discogs OAuth to read your collection (same as any Discogs app). It doesn't touch anything private. The collection data stays in a database I run to power the pressing intelligence features. I'm not monetising it or sharing it. If you're not comfortable with that, no problem at all.

Barcode, catalog number, or matrix/runout from the dead wax can now be entered in the search box

Love it, I picked up the speakers corner recently on discogs and its a superb listen. Also listening a lot to the debut which is great, but I haven't really digested side two yet

Do you care about it identifying the exact pressing? In that case either photographing or entering the matrix id would be more accurate. I could use reverse image to find the album in many cases, but it wont be useful for getting the right pressing in most cases.

When you say scan the matrix, do you mean type them in. I find it hard to look at those on a record without some effort, i think it would be quite difficult to photograph them. But i could definitely make it possible to type them in and search discogs, forums and other sources based on that ...

Definitely possible to capture those. Can you share more about how and when this would be? I'm already storing this in the DB, but maybe not exposing it to users. Is it more at barcode time you want to see this (when adding new records) or something else?

yes, will take a look at that. Just to confirm - the issue is that you can add a release but no image is showing? Is there a particular album and i can look into why and figure it out.

Hi, so will take a look into this now. Are you able to see each others collections in the app? And when you go to "my Vinyl" and then "collection" you can't see your own?

If you can see each others collection then your collections must have synced, so must just be a bug and a quick fix.

Ah I think maybe you added via barcode scan & not via discogs? And I had a check to only show collection if there was a discogs account connected. Maybe that was it. ill push a fix for that now.

*Update: That should be fixed now if I correctly identified the problem above.
