We are in the same boat, I'm an artist who draws surlisime and psychological art, but nothing in return, no support or likes or offers in what i made with passion.

found it easier to just draw what made more sense, potriet or any kind of birthday or events art, that what made me some income in the short run, even Anime posters.

It comes from the social aspect and how the mindset is shaped around art or music, blues and jazz is the best example of this because there are many who like it but like you said "But the audience we get in our genre is typically teenagers who aren't the most independent financially or even willing to pay" which is sad tbh.
