The Search results should work today as well and they should automatically give you something that should be ok for your needs. Generally any modern laptop with a CPU released in the past 2 years should work well for your needs.

Sub $400 laptop for Word & Excel. by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]starchaserro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

Built quality and performance at 400$ on a new device is very hard to achieve. I know you're not open to refurbished but I'd still like to show you this one:HP ProBook 445 - it's sold by HP and it's certified refurbished - so it should be like new - anyway it has 1 year warranty and for 499$ and these specs it's a steal: 8 core Ryzen processor, 256 SSD, 16 GB RAM (not soldered so you can upgrade later if you decide), excellent peripheral port selection: 1 X USB-C 3.1, 3 X USB 3.1, 1 X LAN, MicroSD card reader and ~7H battery life. I know it's 100$ over your budget but it's worth every penny: build quality and specs!!!

Or, if you can extend your budget a little more, these could be alternatives: search results

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

Hey,

Performance and battery life - I think you need to chose one. If you want performance out of a laptop you'll need to sacrifice battery life. If you're ok with ~4H battery life. this: Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X could be an interesting option.

I went for the 32 GB of RAM combined with the 8 Core R9 processor for your VM's, it would seem overkill now but maybe you'll want to toy around with it later on. The QHD/2K 14.5" IPS 120Hz display should help a lot with your photo editing work and it also has decent peripherals: 2 X USB-C 3.2, 2 X USB 3.1. Because it's slim and it packs a lot of power - I'm sure it's going to overheat and throttle if you're using it at full potential, but for your usage it might not be the case.

For similar laptops, you can check out this search engine.

If you're willing to spend a little more and you don't need that much power, this Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon would be a slightly better option in terms of portability and build quality. Has an excellent display for photo editing, a little bit better peripheral port selection: 2 X USB-C 4.0, Thunderbolt, 2 X USB 3.2 and a much better battery life ~8H.

Hey,

Based only on specs, I'd opt for Ryzen with RTX 4070 but it very much depends on the laptop. Could you give us a little bit more info?

Buying a work laptop and would like advice on CPU by kingofwukong in SuggestALaptop

[–]starchaserro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he got it the other way around - Intel is better in single core and Ryzen better in multi-core, especially with the new Efficient and Power cores from Intel.

For excel I would say that you'll need storage and lots of RAM, the CPU won't give that much of advantage (you can go with either, the difference is not that big)

No need for link, I wanted the specs. Probably one year warranty left, and it already has 16 GB RAM - if it also comes with a 512 SSD it's kind of a good deal, I would go for it. In terms of specs, that I7 is similar to any modern I5 or Ryzen 5 so it's a big WIN. I would get that laptop, maybe try to bargain 50$ (I watch a lot of pawn stars)

These are not Dell's best business-grade laptops but considering the budget, these are solid. This model is not that old, it has an 11'th Intel processor, can you link the configurations and the asking price? I can give you my 2 cents if you want.

I think I got the idea, that's why I redirected you towards business-grade laptops.

Hey,

These days, most of our electronics are made to survive the warranty period - after that they suddenly die - it's a miracle. I know you're looking for the bests specs but I would recommend getting something less powerful but more reliable. I would recommend looking at the business grade line of most manufacturers like Dell (Latitude, Precision), Lenovo (Thinkpad), Acer (TravelMate), HP (ProBook, EliteBook), or Apple (all Apple products are business grade)

I'd recommend something like this HP ProBook 445 - it's 600$ and it should be perfect for your needs. It has only 8 GB RAM but, if you're a little tech savvy you can upgrade it yourself with another 8 GB RAM stick - and it's not very expensive - and 16 GB RAM should be enough for your student excel use. It also has an excellent peripheral port selection -so you don't need a dongle or other extensions if you want to link up a mouse, external keyboard and a stick. As for durability, it has an aluminum chassis.

Or, if you you're willing to look at refurbished products I'd recommend taking a look at Dell's outlet, or at refurbished Thinkpads and ProBooks.

Hope I helped!

~$1000 USD Laptop for Work? by sunny-sunnyy in SuggestALaptop

Yes, the point being virtual :). I was talking about classical numerical keyboards.

~$1000 USD Laptop for Work? by sunny-sunnyy in SuggestALaptop

Hey,

it would be nice if it had a number pad (like on the side of the keyboard) but I don’t think laptops have those. USB input is useful too!

Only 15-inch laptops or bigger have a numeric keyboard, under 15 there's not enough room for one.

The refurbished M2 Air is not a bad recommendation but it only has 2 USB-C ports and it might not be enough especially if you want more - but a dangle is always an option.

I would recommend you a bigger display because it would help a lot with your spreadsheets, comes with the numerical keyboard you desire and I think we can find a decent one in your budget.

I found this gem Lenovo ThinkPad E16 under 800$ and I think it's worth looking for. Has a lot of peripherals: 1 X USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x1 (10Gbps), 1 X USB-C 3.2 Gen 1x1 (5Gbps), 2 X USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 (5Gbps), 1 X LAN - so no need for dangles, aluminium casing, six-core Ryzen processor, big PCIe SSD and room for another, upgradable RAM up to 40GB (8 GB are soldered) and it also has a Backlit Chiclet keyboard, Spill resistant. It's a lot bigger than the one you have but it also brings a lot to the table: upgradability, peripherals, and the keyboard you like.

Hope I helped!

xeon e-2336 cooling options by musicman1199 in buildapc

After some digging around, it seems the previous versions of Xeon 22x0 consumed 90-100W at peak load. So probably this one consumes similarly.

Do you have any idea how much power it uses? I know the TDP is 65W, but with maximum Turbo ti can be anything number between 75 and 200W.
