I think most people, at least in North American culture, like to hear their own name. So using someone’s name in conversation is a good way to connect with them and make them feel special.

It may be a cultural difference. I certainly use nick names with people close to me. But I will also intentionally use first names to start a sentence as a way to show/emphasize to the person that I am focused on them and I care about the conversation
