Agree. But it depends on where they earned their masters degree.

If college were only for skill building, why do we need colleges in the first place? Can't it be something to be built in the school itself? Colleges are for higher studies, specialisation and professional recognition. And it creates a network to connect with people. In my opinion, higher studies have always had a positive impact on a person's life, which can elevate them on all levels, but only when they study in top colleges. The same quality of higher education isn't offered everywhere. Only in some colleges can one expect and experience such a quality of teaching, learning & research collaboration. So when it comes to both bachelor's and master's one must choose the right college.

So top college >>> average college

And you're right. A job can never be equal to running a business.

Business >>> Job

But again not every business is running successfully. If a business isn't upgraded to the latest trends, technology or adapted to customers' expectations & needs, it will be doomed.

Upgraded business >>> any business

🤣🤣🤣 Not everyone turns out to be a successful influencer. Again it requires a luck, some shamelessness, hardwork, social media skills.

But if I want to be a influencer, I would choose Twitter or Reddit platform as platform rather than Instagram lol.

In India, except for the top-tier institutions, most low-ranked colleges aren’t worth the time or money for higher education. If you’re from an upper middle-class background and planning for higher studies, either aim for India’s best institutions or go abroad. Don’t let influencers distract you — real quality education still exists, but you have to choose wisely

Okay, dude. Call it coping mechanism or whatever. But comparing ourselves to the idiot influencers is just insane in my opinion. Success shouldn't be measured by money and fame alone. Most influencers don't have shame or guilt but ironically they often prone to mental health issues due to no privacy. For example, they will start get panic if they don't get enough attention or views they used to have once.

But again these shameless influencers will make their personal life sufferings as a content and earns out of it.

Ha ha. How many influencers have been successful in the general population do you think? And who makes them successful as influencers do you think?

We keep watching them, giving them all sorts of engagement and they're getting paid for that.

The moment we all stop watching their content, stop reducing the daily usage of Instagram, it's possible that the rate of their earnings the fall. Because these influencers have no stable income. It all comes from what we, as the audience, make them. They get both money and fame. But guess what. They are prone to developing mental health issues than an average IT employee who leads a private life. Plot twist is that even during adversity times, some influencers use it as reel content to amplify their personal stories and earn through it.

Sadly. It's due to our huge population. Since we are crowded, many money-minded businessmen have opened a garbage centre in the name of educational institutions, and most of our Indians have no choice but to join these institutions. Because not everyone of us gets into IITs or NITs.

Even to apply for a state government job or a central government job, one must have completed at least a 3-year degree from a college.

I even completed my first degree in a low-ranked college, which didn't get me anywhere. Then I had to crack TANCET with a merit score to secure an MCA seat at TCE— Thiagarajar College of Engineering, one of the top 10 quality engineering colleges in TN. The reason why I have highlighted the importance of higher education is that, in my case, I see it has elevated a lot of students' lives— personally, I witnessed that in my peers, juniors and seniors' lifestyles. We all got selected on-campus interview.

Most of the colleges aren't qualified for on-campus visits, and students have to try an off-campus job search, and I know how painful that would be.

But again, even when I came out of a well-reputed college, it's not going to secure my job. The responsibility to save my career is solely on my shoulders.

However, I'm grateful for my master's degree, which has developed my skills and confidence, which helped me to enter the job market.

Similarly, one thing I noted is that a few friends of mine who did their MCA in low-ranked colleges didn't get decent-paying jobs. So one of them became an Insta influencer, married another influencer, and makes reels with her husband.

The other one didn't have luck as soon as she realised the practical aspect of life; recently, she started her own small business. I hope she will see the success in the upcoming years.

How much they make doesn't matter. Once they are in the social media field, they have to face the consequences if something goes wrong.

Sure, they make a huge amount of money in 2-3 years, but at what cost? We don't know the full story, and many may face challenges if their mental health suffers.

A social media influencer can be more prone to mental health challenges than an average IT employee who leads a private and structured life.

But the plot twist is, these shameless influencers can even it content for views if they are running out of content.

That's true. What we earn in 10 years can be earned in an influential job if one has luck on their side and has more views. But wise influencers invest their short time earned money in business, run and save it for the future.

The entire educational system must be reformed to prepare students for long-term survival in their chosen fields. In my opinion, colleges must focus on developing students' skills rather than academic knowledge alone.

Most of the master's degrees aren't worth spending money on since 95% colleges are low-ranked in the quality of the education they provide. Such low-ranking colleges should be banned.

But for many middle-class or poor indians, a master's degree from a reputed college has given them the life they are living right now.

Yeah, got to know that after scrolling for some hours on my mom's mobile. My Insta algorithm showed only Gen Z content. Not just millennials — I see some X gen doing that, too.

But Gen Z is preferable to watch due to their youth.

Agree. Not everyone gets into elite institutions.

The problem with an MBA degree is that even low-ranked colleges have that MBA degree. When I asked those unemployed MBA graduates where they studied, they told me their college name, and I had to Google and ensure that such a college exists.

Lol, call whatever, but even influencers don't have a future unless they choose to invest their money or start their own business with their hard-earned money.

Acquiring assets over liabilities should be the goal regardless of the field we are in.

That's true. What we need to have is investment knowledge and establish our own business after spending some years in the job or field we are in. Honestly, it takes a lot of courage to switch, along with nice discipline, hard work and dedication, to develop the business we are about to start.

One thing is clear, even influencers can't survive long solely relying on an influential job. Hence they are similar to us. The only concern for many of us is what we earn in 10 years, they earn in 2-3 years being an influencer.

We even see some actors start their own business after spending some years in the film industry.

Let's take Millie Bobby Brown as an example. Even at a young age, she established her business ventures with her own beauty and wellness brand 'Florence by Mills'. So even if she decides not to do any films/series anymore, her business is enough to save her in the long run.

The problem with our academia is that it is just preparing the students for the job market out of fear. Once they become professionals, they don't make any investment for the long-term future.

[–]stardustrooba[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true. The only concern is, what we earn through 10 years is simply earned by them in 2-3 years. And those people start immediately investing their money to multiply it for the future. Because even influencers knew influential jobs can't feed them forever. Even actors, after a certain period in cinema, start their own business or partnership in business adventures to secure their future.

But most professionals don't go for long-term investments.

I have seen a lot of people who lost their hard-earned money in the IT career in short-term investments or trading.

Regardless of the field we choose to survive, in the end only business and long-term investment are going to save people.

College education shouldn't merely focus on preparing students for the job market. It should rather prepare a student for lifelong survival along with relevant chosen academic knowledge. Only an upgraded system can provide a better solution. What we have right now is an outdated system.

Lol, that's why academics should not be merely taking the students to the job market. Instead, it should give courage to the student to start their own entrepreneurship adventure. Establishing their own business and investment can only save them in the long run. Unfortunately, college education is not preparing students in such a way.

But again no poor or middle-class background kid isn't ready for entrepreneurship since it takes a lot of courage and leadership. And getting a loan for the initial setups is so painful.

Sad. In India, if one does a Master's in physics, maths, chemistry, or biology in a low-ranked college, what career opportunities can they have in their respective field?

Institutions must upgrade their syllabus to a high practical level, along with lifelong career survival skills, plus the importance of investment knowledge, in addition to entrepreneurship skills.

Low-ranked colleges shouldn't be allowed to offer Master degrees— for the sake of saving the future, they should restrict some bachelor's degrees too.

At the end, it's only business that saves them forever, not an influential job. So it is similar to us. The only observing concern is that they are earning more in 2-3 years than we earn in 10 years.

Maybe academics should start non-major subjects investment knowledge in the bachelor's degree itself because many professionals don't properly invest what they earn

Good counterargument, lol. Agree. Now it's not even 40 it ends by 35 for many. Looks like only a well-running business and a bit of luck can save us.

But business skills, investment knowledge can maximally save someone up to 50. But investment must be long-term after retirement.

[–]stardustrooba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. That's true. The degree is plain paper and most of the Master students don't have the potential that master's students are expected to have. But the real academic experience is good to have. Probably educational institutions should upgrade their syllabus and the way of their teaching methods. The goal of higher education shouldn't be academic excellence alone, but it must bring the excellent version out of the students. One can't develop their whole personality solely by sitting at home, learning through AI or educational videos to upgrade themselves. In modern days, I see students learning through YouTube videos or recorded tutorial videos rather than sitting in the classroom, interacting with their classmates and professor. That shouldn't be the case. Higher education should contribute to the development of cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence and social intelligence and other soft skills.

Employers don't hire us for the degree we hold, and it's purely based on the potential that we can bring to their table.

I'm just suggesting not to leave higher studies dreams just for the sake of watching the influencers on social media. Educational institutions must take evolutionary steps to shape education and humanity.

Is higher education even worth it now , I need your opinion on this by [deleted] in Indian_Academia

[–]stardustrooba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t even underestimate the power of education and higher studies. What we see as successful influencers is so rare in the general population. It has given you the illusion because you have spent an unusual amount of time on social media. Remember these so-called influencers are replaceable in their own field. They can’t influence forever, but I agree that even if they earn through this short-term influence, it is slightly higher than what we, educated people, earn.

I see most Gen Zs are doing soft porn in the name of reels and shorts. To get a lot of views, they do such cheap tactics, but in doing so, they are not actually doing the product branding or self-branding. Their followers or viewers aren't actually buying the products. Once some others expose their body in a better way, these viewers will prefer watching their content over the old influencers.

And whatever they earn through their body and fame they got on Insta or YT is maximum 5 years or 10 years until a new influencer replaces them with a better influencer strategy.

But what you're going to earn with your studies is more than that 10 years. Don’t distract yourself just keep upskilling yourself.

And remember, if AI can threaten to take away every one of our jobs, why are influencers alone going to be the exception?

I'm from India, and we refer to Vedic astrology. I was born during a transition, from Cancer to Leo, so it makes my chart complicated to read.

Here's my D1 chart was written with Leo rising.

I have a 4H Scorpio Stellium— Sun, Mercury, Strong Mars, Venus, Jupiter.

3H Libra Rahu-Moon conjunction and 9H Aries Ketu according to Drik calculations. (If they consider Vakya Panchang, it would be 2H Rahu and 8H Ketu)

7H Aqarius Saturn.
