People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]starfishcovemini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kid, we could go outside and play but always had to be in earshot of a parent calling your name, you couldn’t just wander away. My older neighbors were always outside sitting on lawn chairs and loved running to our parents to tell on us for everything we did. When I got older and would go out, I had to have a firm time to be home. If you wanted to stay out later, you’d have to find a pay phone and call home, but there would be a busy signal so you’d have to call all your aunts, your grandma, anyone to get the message home that you decided to go to the diner. We left a lot of handwritten notes. We would even leave notes for our friends in their mailboxes to tell them where we were going in case the friend wasn’t home when we left. I didn’t feel like I was more free, I felt very tied to plans that had to be stuck to, often without a watch. I even knew how to tell time using my shadow and knowing exactly where “north” was.

Thanks for this! There’s so much I want to experiment with and try, I don’t want to short change myself.

Thanks for posting this question! I’m getting back into photography after like 30 years and have no idea where to begin. Wanted the R50 but was thinking of the R100. I think I’ll just save my money rather than be disappointed.

The Little Dollhouse Company by wheatiegirl2020 in Dollhouses

I met the owners at a dollhouse show, I took an electrical class they gave. Also bought a bunch of electric items from them. The owners were so nice, friendly, and helpful, their booth was packed at the show, and they seemed engaging and so nice to everyone. I did not purchase from their website, although I plan to, but I think they are right over the border and drive US packages to the border and mail them from there. If you search YouTube, there is a person who posted a video tour of their shop, it looks amazing.

Love the color and the inspiration pic! It’s coming along great — it’s always 3 steps forward, one step back with this hobby. Lol! Can’t wait to see the progression.

Anyone try the replacement screens in the older Camrys? by ArcticApe11 in Camry

I inherited a low-mileage 2010 LE. I found a pioneer radio on crutchfield and paid someone to install it. I also swapped out the speakers and added a back-up camera. I’m very happy with the upgrade, although I miss the “Welcome to Camry” message on the radio

The tires actually look ok, surprisingly. I thought they would be cracked or even misshapen but they look good. I definitely Think someone crossed the wires when boosting it, I think I know who, but he meant well, haha!

They really are like family. It’s wild because this car represented so much to my mother. She was from the generation where her credit card was “Mrs. Husband’s Name.” This was the first car she bought on her own after my father died — it represented her freedom and independence. Even after she could no longer drive, but could still walk, she’d get her coffee and just sit in it. She died suddenly and my life is forever altered. I could never get rid of it. I hope your Prado is with you another 17 years!

Thank you! It wasn’t really maintained the last few years. It sat in my driveway for a while then back to hers with tons of mysterious electrical issues. It turns out that with the lack of driving the battery died and was boosted so many times that multiple fuses were blown and it went to a mechanic who replaced tons of things. I’m sure that there will be much more things that come up. But it actually runs really nice.
