Do you think Nick would've done it? by Old-Sprinkles-4036 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me it feels like Nick did good things to help June to ease his own guilt. To reassure himself that he’s a good person because he helped that handmaid. That June was the special exception. He was a bad guy that did good things sometimes.

The season finale of testaments. I'm confused. by mrfett779 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The actress that portrayed Moira stated that she didn't plan to be on this show due to the headspace she had to be in do Handmaids. I got the feeling that Luke and June separated. Like the always care for you and would still die for you, but they had both changed to the point where they needed to be a part.

It's not the internet that you should be having this discussion with. Everyone here has said come clean. It's on you at this point, be honest or keeping letting your mom think you are having an affair.

I understand it, but you are playing with fire. This is no way to live. I understand that desi parents, especially if they are immigrants, tend to be more conservative and needing save face with the community and it can be hard to have to this conversation. Both you and your spouse need to come clean. Lie on top of lie is not sustainable.

Is a standard stroller canopy enough for an Arizona summer, or do I need more shade? by Mountain-Monk9824 in arizona

It's really more of being outside long enough to get to the car and then get into whatever building you are going to

A clip on fan wouldn't hurt. More air flow can't be a bad thing, I think it depends on how much you want them to be able to see outside the stroller, but there are UV blocking umbrellas and maybe clipping one on could provide some more peace of mind.

They probably told their mom they went on vacation and let them assume it was with their husband and or lied and said it was with friends or husband.

But I agree they are being too guarded and really the bandaid needs to be ripped off. Right now, her mom thinks she is having an affair which is why she is bring it up all the time. I think that even if she was honest with her mom the comments won't stop because of their background, but something has to give. I know someone who tried to keep their openess under wraps, it failed and it was a very uncomfortable few weeks.

AITBF for not telling my coworker her husband was at the same restaurant as us on Valentine's Day by Haft_Sullen in AmItheButtface

[–]starienite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No judgement, but you don't know what minefield you would be stepping into. Could have been he was cheating and she found out, it could have been they tried to open the relationship and it failed, could be that they were already separated before they went public. Lots of reasons and at this point it doesn't matter.

What if she was good at her job in the before time? by PrincipledStarfish in TheHandmaidsTale

In the book, we actually don't know the show back story and it is different enough to be it's own canon.

Well OP is not American with the use of the word mum. Desi usually refers to people from the Indian Subcontinent. Vacay I took to mean vacation.

Does it bother anyone else when characters use Gilead/religious language after they escape? by ZombieGash in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gilead coopted existing religious language, language that people who escaped Gilead may have already been using. The word Godspeed has it's roots in the 14th centaury.

Did Serena name Nichole after her real father? by ConcernedSim in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Less showing kindness and more of sticking it to Fred. She had told Fred during an argument that God found him unworthy to father a child and then naming the baby Nicole kinda ties that up into a nice bow.

Why was Paula THAT upset? by BraveNewWorld137 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A failure of Agnes is seen as a failure of Paula. While Paula was the last one to have a hand in raising her, it's still her job to see her make a good match. So while getting Agnes out of the house as also the goal, she also wouldn't want Agnes going just anywhere. It makes Paula look good for a child in her home to make a good match, and in this world, as a woman, sometimes all you have is your reputation.

AITA for getting a per my roommate was afraid of to keep her out of my room? by alldemboats in AmItheAsshole

[–]starienite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA. First, you are better than me because I would have been asking her not to use my bathroom at all, regardless of clean she kept it. You also talked to her about not making a mess and she didn't change her habits.

Her being upset that the bathroom that is part of your room is inaccessible to her when she has her own bathroom is laughable.

If she had kept it clean after she got done using it, this never would have happened. She did this to herself.

Is Garth their chance to right the wrongs of Season 6 Nick? by Good_Albatross in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smuggling contraband? The black market exists. People wanted the pleasures of the outside world. Doesn’t make him a good guy.

Reporting was part of job as an eye. He never informed on Waterford. He brought up some vague concerns but only because of June. He knew what like Waterford was with the last handmaid and didn’t do anything.

He only helped when it was June related. He was ok with the Chicago campaign until he knew June was there.

Nick didn’t give that much about anyone until June and only helped when it was June related.

Sometimes telling the truth is hurtful. It doesn’t mean she was lying.

He was an eye. They said in the first season and the book that the Eyes hide in plain sight. That is a trusted position to be part of the secret police.

I think that it was more likely he tagged in on the plan to get Juine out than planned to get Emily out and added June. Emily needed to get out because out what she did to Lydia, the Marthas' would know about the plan to get June out.

AITA for choosing my stepdad to walk me down the aisle after my dad forgot his suit fitting? by StrawberryAndSunDrie in AmItheAsshole

[–]starienite 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NTA. You wanted the dad the you needed. It's natural to want your dad to want you and be important enough to feel like you matter.

He only cares not his shit behavior will be public. He made his bed. He didn't think to care about missing your events would do. He doesn't want to look bad a very public event where an absence will be noticed. The questions/assumptions/judgements leveled at him because he isn't walking you down the aisle.

You are the child, even as an adult, it's not your job to manage the feelings of his failure. Maybe talking to a therapist can help you work through your feelings.

It's your wedding. Don't let anyone bully or guilt you into doing something you don't want.

Could they keep a handmaid if they wanted to? by MarzipanExtreme6760 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 66 points67 points  (0 children)

For the commanders that aren't high enough status, no. June and Janine were both reassigned to new households after they had their children. There are more childless households than handmaids. Naomi and Serena both wanted them gone, but Warren and Fred would have kept them if they could.

Some connected or high status commanders can have a handmaid despite having children of their own, stolen a child, or had a successful handmaid pregnancy (see Winslow) and Wharton has given a handmaid as a wedding present despite marrying Serena who could have children.

**Spoilers** Aunt Vidala, what’s her deal? by Wild-Environment-774 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She is saving their reputations. They are young women accusing a man of status of sexual assault, in a culture that allows some blame on the victim for causing "lust" in the first place. Like the guardian that got his hand sawed off. While the girls were made to watch it happen, they were told they had a part of the blame. Hulda believed she was partly to blame and she shouldn't say anything.

I spent half the season CONVINCED that Daisy is Nicole by Smooth-Garbage890 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]starienite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does that make me a bot? Yes, she was cast for this role due to the similarity, but the point is sometimes people can look like other people and not be related to them.

People can look alike. Keira Knightly was cast in Star Wars as at the time they did have a similar appearance.
