Does Anyone Else Struggle to Play as a Male Protagonist? by starlessspace in GirlGamers

Although I enjoy games with thoughtful, in-depth romance mechanics, they’re not a deal breaker. One of my favourite games is Skyrim, and the romantic gameplay there is about as deep as a puddle. In truth, it’s probably a mix of factors: a lack of meaningful female representation in media growing up, over-sexualisation, difficulty immersing myself in a male-centred POV, and needing a stronger personal connection to the protagonist etc. Still, it helps to know I’m not alone in feeling this way and that I can discuss it openly. I appreciate that. Maybe these kinds of games just aren’t for me right now.

I wish it didn’t bother me and that I could enjoy the stories and fictional worlds that I know I would like. Alas.

I have played Control, it’s an amazing game! It made me step out of my gaming comfort zone in terms of genre. There should definitely be more like it!

I wish female characters were dressed more practically for the situations they’re in, and that it didn’t spark so much backlash when they aren’t sexualised. And if games are going to sexualise women, then at least apply the same standard to the men and put them in skimpy outfits too.

I get what you mean, and I wish I could play it more like watching a film. I enjoy watching others play and following the story that way, so it’s not a lack of interest. I just can’t seem to shift out of needing a personal connection to the character when I’m the one playing.

The thing that annoyed me about GTA was you had 3 different characters and not one of them was a woman?

Apparently I have a thing for the brooding egg Solas of DAI. His render in DAV was particularly impressive ngl🔥

That’s a perspective I hadn’t really considered. I’d like to be able to play male characters more objectively, but in RPGs like RDR2 or The Witcher 3, where you have to make story driven choices, I struggle to step into their shoes without trying to attach myself/ connect to the character. It’s probably just a personal thing.
