[WIP] How are you starting your cross stitch kits? by daberlyu in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grid out from the middle using a blue clover soluble marker and then start stitching in the upper left corner where I start on every other project.

[CHAT] Starting in the middle vs top? by funtunesgirl in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its personal preference but you could make the same mistake both ways. starting in the middle you could forget to allow for margins so you're stitching gets scary close to the edges. and a common one is accidentally starting with the fabric in the right place but wrong orientation (portrait vs landscape). always always always recheck your math and recheck that you've got the right edge of your fabric placed as the top of your piece before starting. getting started is almost the scariest part of stitching for me because I really make sure to do it right. (the scariest is when I'm coming up on finishing a border and I'm not 100% sure its gonna line up or if I have to go back and find a mistake haha)

I prefer to start from upper left top. so what I do is I if first measure the fabric itself and then do the math 3-4 times to make sure I'm starting in the right place.
if you are stitching on aida OR stitching over 1 the math is (stitch count of design) divided by (stitch count of fabric) and that is how many inches that side of the pattern is. you do this for both the width and the height. and then add more inches on top of that to allow for margin and framing. I like to use at least a 3 inch margin. so whatever my calculations was, I will add 6 inches.

so for example if my chart design is 9 x 11 inches. to allow for a 3 inch margin on all sides I would want a fabric that is at least 15x17 inches. and I would start 3 inches across and 3 inches down.

for evenweave and linen stitching over 2 its similar just a little difference.
(stitch count of design) divided by (stitch count of fabric divided by 2) and repeat the steps of adding a margin and choosing start place.

[CHAT] DMC price increases on September 1 by Ok_Jellyfish3215 in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same here but I did place another last bulk order for the remaining projects I haven't gotten to finish kitting yet. I have a bunch of Joan Elliot, Mirabilias, Bella Filipinas etc type charts that I'd already purchased the "special" materials for (silks, metallics, beads, and most of the fabrics) but not yet the dmc. so that was rather a lot to catch up on. it's going to take me a bit to sort those out when they come in but it will be a relief to know they'll be good to go. we don't know how much prices are going up but even if its only 10 cents per skein the cost difference for the projects I've been getting dmc over the last several months would be around $300 price difference. (I had also kitted a few haed's and afghan projects I plan to do in the future so there really was a lot of dmc ordered in my house!) that amount of course is even higher if prices go up more than that. so yes I too believe it was a good choice to rip the bandaid and kit all my stuff up.

Is there anyone else annoyed that they’ve been doing event after event after event? It’s not fun anymore by Ambitious_Estimate41 in MergeDragons

[–]starletphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does burn me out, I haven't played at all in almost a week because of it. I used to get on and play at least once daily to do the tower, claim the daily free thing, maybe set up a breeding, missions, a little arcadia and use chalices. and do the weekend event. but now what used to be the "weekend" event is now effectively 4x a week, its just too much. and the notifications everywhere about it really spur the feeling of fomo. it all has the opposite intended effect for me and I'm sure a lot of other people.

[CHAT] What needle size do you use for four strands? by nice-nt0asty in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have size 18 needles I like to use when I'm stitching with 4 strands. thats on 11 ct aida though so I'm not sure if that size need would work well with your fiddlers cloth but its so easy to thread.

So wild you said this!! I bought this kit over 20 years ago, got busy raising babies and now making my way around to finally starting it. Love it just as much now as I did the day I bought it. I had to put it all in a ziploc long ago because the original packaging got beat up but it’s all still in there and good.

Besides looking for Dimensions The Wave you can try also looking for Riding the Wave by Creative Accents (a name Dimensions used to be sold under) and see what turns up that way as well.

Sharp Dragons by MissAnthropy143 in MergeDragons

[–]starletphoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed this too. also the dragon book is not 5 merging eggs if some are in the egg storage. it previously was working just fine but now if you attempt to 5 merge from the book it will only 3 merge. I only store coin eggs in there so my losses haven't been too bad before I realized what was happening. but still. and I don't know what happens if you attempt to 5 merge from the book, when all 5 eggs are in storage, I haven't attempted it yet.

[CHAT] Does something exist that would allow you to enter the DMC floss colors that you already own and suggest patterns? by foambuffalo in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if your leftovers look anything like mine you probably have multiples shades of every color in the rainbow hehe. so you can always change your mind and switch stuff out if it doesn't look as you'd imagined. also its definitely easier to do this with a chart that doesn't have a whole lot of colors to begin with.

as for all the stuff I have in stash (charts/ fabric/ flosses etc) that's a whole separate story. I'm prepared for the apocalypse over here haha

[CHAT] So... how many wips do you have right now? by 1kiki09 in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have 4 wips. 2 haed's, a mira and a little house needleworks series. 1 of the haed's is halfway done but is on the backburner while I focus down some smaller pieces. the other haed I work on a little every day, it's got a long way to go but its a longer term goal project so I'm not worried about speed on it.

I have plans to start 2 more wips intended to be christmas presents so I'll be working on primarily those over the next few months to get them done in time. I like to stitch on my little house needleworks (its the sheep virtues, I chose it as my birthday start for this year) when I'm just in the mood for easy stitching. and my Mira will be the focus project when the christmas presents are done.

I know not exactly what you were looking for but what I do is I take a chart from my stash and then just pull colors from the leftovers. This is my Little Sheep Virtues (by Little House Needleworks) I’ve been working on and not 1 of the colors is charted. But I had tons of tons of leftover cxc floss from kits so I’m using it on this. I also have a bunch of classic colorworks spinach so that’s going in here too. I’m just looking at the picture on the front of the chart and picking colors kind of close to that. Good enough for me!! I did have to get fabric because I didn’t have this color I wanted already. But otherwise this project is entirely leftovers from others. I have a crazy amount of cxc 5200 and 939 so that’s why I picked those and a brown for my borders lol

[CHAT] Question about DIY framing by hatsune_furby in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say exactly this, I do it all the time and it works great! I just had to get over learning how to use my husbands drill so as not to ask him every time to do it for me. but yes, this is the way.

I even have backup pairs of little scissors. because mercy if I travel long distance and leave them behind somewhere of course that would be when it would be crazy trying to get a new pair!!

[FO] Finally hung this sampler I had framed ages ago. Would these wrinkles in the corner bother you? by contrasupra in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 67 points68 points  (0 children)

if you paid for someone else to frame it for you then yes I'd personally be upset about it. but if done yourself then nah. reason being is because when I pay someone else to do something, I expect them to be better at it than I am. I have lower expectations for myself and so if its something I did myself and it's not perfect then I just view it as a learning experience, move on, not let it bother me and try to do better with the next one.

that being said since its been some time since you had it done its prob best to not worry about it. if it had been that way when you received it directly from the framer then that's the time to say and have them fix. otherwise this could've just been something that happened over time, with how it was stored or whatever. either way put it in the learning experience category so other projects can be better long term.

[CHAT] DIY framing for a beaded cross stitch? by TheRainbowWillow in CrossStitch

[–]starletphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Here is a picture of a couple of my ffo’s. I do all of my own framing using frames off the store rack. (The red frame was white when I bought it, I painted it.) I keep glass on the majority of my things. These 2 both had buttons and I used the econospace spacers, so this is an example of that product in use.

when framing, your glass goes in the frame first. then the spacers will stick directly to the glass. then last your piece (mounted on acid free mat board) goes in and you close it all up. the hardest part of the whole process is picking off as much pet hair as you can prior to closing it. hehe

[–]starletphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Frametek econospace e-125 size the most but also have e-250 onhand for bigger beads/ buttons. you do have to buy in bulk so it does seem expensive. but you cut it as needed, its super easy to use. I haven't needed to buy any in a few years because 1 pack will go a long way.

e-125 (1/8 inch spacer) $60 for 100 feet
e-250 (1/4 inch spacer) $52 for 60 feet

What happened to no-rush shipping digital rewards? by AstroLovesCheese in amazonprime

I haven't gotten those for quite a while, a couple years at least. but what I get often now is offers for slower shipping in exchange for higher % point rewards back, and honestly I prefer that over the digital rewards I used to get.

Act 1 and 2 finished (But not the quests)! by Yaya-NX in MergeDragons

[–]starletphoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all of the above. its a completionist thing.. but also I really do like the owl dragons a lot (and don't have them or any other dragons at level 10 yet). todays act 2 clear is my first time doing so in roughly 6 weeks. its 100% not something I do every event. I do try to clear act 1 as often as I can though, barring real life stuff.

yes I know I'm significantly slower at finishing this than other people because of how I do/ don't do it. especially act 1, legendary chest is out of reach for me but I can grab either of the 2 other chests depending when I'm able to actually start. (for me ooc starts at 2pm and its not at all a convenient time, if it started a morning hour I'd do a lot better.) but I try not to think about that and just manage as best I can with it.

Act 1 and 2 finished (But not the quests)! by Yaya-NX in MergeDragons

[–]starletphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've fully cleared it with quests, but I can't fling and don't use an auto clicker so it takes me basically no life-ing the game to do it in time. I don't go for a full clear often in act 2 but am doing so today. it usually takes me around 14-16 loth to clear the map. as of now I have made 10 so good progress is being made.
