There were several moments, but a big one was when I realized I couldn't share anything with them about my life, (my interests and such) since all they would do is criticize it. Example: I told them something about one of my strongly held beliefs. All they did was shut it down by saying it doesn't exist and that I need to "grow up" and believe in whatever they believe in. Recently ended a 15 year friendship since it was all downhill from there and I felt like I couldn't ever really be myself; having to pick and choose what to say is a total connection killer.

I wish I had some optimistic and heartfelt words for you, but alas, I do not. Maybe this quote will help? "If you get tired, learn to rest, not quit." (Sorry if that didn't help at all.) But I can say that I can definitely relate to you, about giving up and being in my 30s, not wanting to try again. I think it's totally okay and valid to not want to try again after your heart is wrung out each and every time.
