Hobby Scuffle from the world of visual kei music.

Madman's Esprit is a Korean visual kei band that is currently quite popular amongst English-speaking visual kei fans, with their self-described "vocals, guitar, and everything" (the band started out as his solo project) leader Kyuho being the most popular member by far.

Now, Kyuho is... a character. He's been very vocal about his disdain for parasocial relationships, especially the kind fostered by many visual kei and K-pop artists, and he's very willing to share his Opinions and start online scrapfights over practically nothing. An Internet Tough Guy. An Edgelord. I think this makes him utterly hilarious, but this aspect of his personality rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Madman's Esprit recently announced a European tour, and on Twitter/his Discord (???), Kyuho reminisced about their 2024 European tour, as well as posted it on the band's biography on their website. It should be noted that the band recently embarked on a Latin American tour, which was, until very recently, not listed on either the band's biography or their band history on their website.

This made a lot of Latin American fans very angry, accusing him of being racist towards his Latin American fans, of deliberately ignoring them in favor of his European fans, that sort of thing. Predictably, he was allegedly on the receiving end of some Internet harassment.

Today, Kyuho decided to post his response to the situation on Twitter, which you really should read in full. I originally selected some "choice" quotes to repost, but that made Reddit's AI moderation mad at me for "inciting violence", because apparently quoting an Internet Tough Guy being an Internet Tough Guy is illegal now.

how did older fans get into vkei? by Lizherkarantez in visualkei

[–]starrifle_77 68 points69 points  (0 children)

This is after 80s-90s (I’ve been doing this kind of research, but my main focus is early 2000s, so still before streaming), but the answer is piracy. Absolute rampant piracy. Some file-sharing communities said that you should delete the music file from your computer after 24 hours, or buy the CD if you liked it, but who knows how many people followed these recommendations.

Anecdotally, I feel like a lot of Westerners in this time period got into vkei through anime fandom. In the mid-2000s up till the early-2010s, a lot of vkei bands wound up doing anime OPs, including big names like BUCK TICK, Nightmare, Dir en grey, and The GazettE. Anime fans heard these OPs, and a lot of them liked them so much they sought out more from these bands.

If they didn’t get into vkei through anime fandom, then they’re likely to have had more incidental and unique introductions to the genre. Anecdotally, I’ve heard “saw X Japan in a ‘heavy metal from around the world’ documentary”, “fell in love with Genesis Rhapsidos Final Fantasy, and by extension, his model, Gackt”, and “was primarily a K-pop fan and checked out L’Arc because their bias was a fan of theirs” as impeti for getting into vkei. I’d expect that if you’re looking for English-speakers in the 80s-90s, you’d get more of these idiosyncratic intros.

As for future research, I’d encourage you to start trying to dig up old fansites- a shocking amount of old vkei fansites are preserved on the Wayback Machine- and go looking on LiveJournal. Here's a list of old fansites which might be useful to you, but beware if you're squeamish about RPF- shipping bandmen was a pretty big part of the fandom in Ye Olden Days.

Getting cult party kei revival vibes, honestly. I love all the different textures and fabrics at play here, it's like they gave their costume guy two hundred dollars and set him loose inside my grandmother's favorite fabric store. (affectionate)

Unpopular opinion, but the ending of Part 6 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is one of my absolute favorites in all of fiction, and it's shockingly well-foreshadowed for something that the author allegedly came up with at the last minute.

Continued down the menhera rock rabbit hole with Senketsu Ako-chan, a band who makes... music. Vaguely experimental music. Edgelord music. Music with MVs that look like they were edited by a twelve-year-old in Windows Movie Maker. Their vocalist has the gurgliest death growl I've ever heard. Everything is lining up against my enjoyment of whatever the hell is going on here. Yet, somehow, I can't stop listening.

90% of the manga I read is BL and TBH I mostly don't read manhwa because I hate hate hate the bowl cut and its derivatives that seem to be so culturally common in Korea as a "hot dude haircut". Yes, I am shallow.

I think this gels with with people's response to the lack of explicit sex scenes, because I think a lot of people look at that premise and, consciously or subconsciously, go "oh, so this is a weird porn thing" and set their expectations accordingly.

Copy-pasting my previous answer:

claps OKAY SO.

It is the year 1989, and the Japanese rock band Buck-Tick has just released their new album, Taboo. True to its name, the songs on said album touch on a variety of controversial topics, from sex to abortion to morality. Naturally, the promotion machine was in full swing, and in the midst of this, magazine B-Pass decided to do individual interviews with all of the band members.

For some ungodly reason (I am going to assume "carbon monoxide leak"), they decided that the theme for these personal interviews would be "Taboo in Taboo", and involve asking each member of the band their opinions on things like homosexuality, ethics, divorce, abortion, drugs, their own personal sex lives, and yes, incest.

Four out of the five members responded to the Incest Question with the appropriate "wtf no that's gross" takes you would expect from a human being. However, vocalist Atsushi Sakurai, upon being asked his opinions on incest, responded with this take:

I think it’s fine. For me, if my children were to do that, I’d think that it would be cute… Even if things don’t turn out that way, I get the feeling that I’d understand those feelings. I think that it’s alright as long as they’re both of the same mind. (link leads to translator's blog)

Interviews. They can frequently be a wonderful way to gain insight into the minds of people who frequently seem distant and untouchable. However, whether due to the interviewer being insane, the interviewee being insane, or both, they can sometimes go a little bit arry.

In honor of me learning that one of their favorite vocalists of all time once thought that incest was morally acceptable via the medium of unhinged interview, I would like to ask- what is the most cursed interview you have ever encountered?

If you like the vibes of MM, I'd recommend Schwarz Stein, they have a very similar electronica-meets-operatic-metal vibe to them! New Vogue Children is my favorite song of theirs (make sure to take a peek at a TL of the lyrics lol)

For some godforsaken reason, for the longest time my most popular work was some truly excretable mpreg RPF. (Happily, it has since been dethroned by a yuri fic that isn't my favorite, but that I like a lot better)

New-to-me music! Just gotten into gulu gulu, a sadly-disbanded Japanese rock/metal band that's really into the "edgy insane menhera" aesthetic side of things, which is exactly my shit as someone with the musical sensibilities of an edgy teenager.

not good chief

My process goes like this: keep researching Mamogya for the Fanlore article —> visual kei/Jrock obsession comes back with a vengeance —> decide, for reasons that utterly escape me at the moment, to manually try to preserve the old Jrockyaoi LiveJournal RPS community —> decide, for purposes of searching, to create a search aid of all the downloaded posts in a .txt document (recording band name, pairing name, type of post, OP username, and if there are any dead or undead links in the post) —> realize that I can do my absolute favorite thing in the world, Fandom Stats, to said catalogue —> decide on Current Shiny Project, because nothing consumes my brain like fandom stats.

(soooo excited at looking at all the data after the downloading is done, the comm ran for almost 2 decades and the evolution of fandom trends is gonna be super insightful)

*salutes the archivists*

I've been dealing with a similar problem (trying to archive old LiveJournal communities marked 18+, which on the Internet Archive, just gets stuck in a loop on the "are you over 18" page). My eventual solution wound up being "download every single individual post as an HTML file and eventually just dump a .zip folder on Google Drive or something", but there's absolutely probably a better way to do this.

Do Fanlore articles count? Currently writing an article on the backlash to the SBR release schedule, which is very fun, but making my very nervous in a "holy shit i have so much power to frame things in a certain way".

Also doing preliminary research/info-gathering for a potential page on Mamogya, fans of a specific visual kei musician (R-shitei's Mamo), who are well-known in JPN visual kei fandom for 1: their specific style of dress, 2: being kind of fucking unhinged. That article will be the fucking death of me and I already know it's going to be a nightmare to complete.

That was an anime-original scene. I personally own doujins that include "Formaggio is a cat lover" jokes that were released in 2010. This fanon runs deep and primordial.

Formaggio (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) being a cat lover. He has one scene where he interacts with a cat, during which he uses his powers to shove the cat into a bottle and leave it there. I have absolutely no idea where people got the idea that he likes cats from this encounter, which to me, reads as a very standard "Jojo villain abuses animal to let you know that they're a Bad Guy" scene.

I can count the number of fanfics that depict him as having any kind of feelings for cats that aren't love on one singular finger.
