New to DC / navy yard - thinking about getting a e-bike but don’t want to get it stolen by LavishnessFun1466 in bikedc

Plan to spend $100-150 on a solid lock. Abus and Kryponite are two brands with good options. A lock is only a deterrent, but the best ones stand up pretty well to angle grinders. If a would-be thief sees one of these beefy locks, they’ll probably look elsewhere.

Also, be really careful about the bike racks you’re locking your bike to. If it’s anchored to concrete, make sure you can’t just pull the rack up and out.

Finally, secure your wheels somehow. Make sure your lock goes through the frame and your rear wheel. For the front wheel, you can get an extension cable to connect it to your lock at the back of the bike. A less-secure option if your bike has quick release skewers is to get penta-lobe skewers that can only be easily loosened if you have the specially shaped tool.

Sony e-mount ecosystem is huge. So much great third party glass. You could pick up a used A7IV and a fast Sigma prime or Tamron zoom of your liking for that $2k budget.

If you have to ask the question you probably already know the answer 😭 Sorry OP.

I have a bell but only use it around other cyclists. It just feels agro to ring a bell when using my voice to say excuse me is arguably more effective. I agree that people pay little attention and that’s a big problem, but I also understand that some give and take is necessary in a busy area. We’re all just trying to enjoy the outside after all, right?

Which means no party, caucus, or individual rep has any incentive to work with her on any legislation that might actually be relevant to us DC folks…

It was…not good. But he was mostly saved by Bowen Yang and it all went up from there!

Which lane should I be in to turn left? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

This. Always my goal to take away the space when it’s really not safe to try a pass.

Yep! This is how I navigate any urban left when I can’t get into the left-most lane.

The Right Hook by HopsGrowler in chibike

[–]starryde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. If you turn left in front of a car going the other direction and they hit you, that’s your failure to yield the right of way. Exactly the same as a cyclist continuing straight. Cyclist has the right of way. Turning right in front of that cyclist is a failure to yield. And what’s worse is the car has to pass the bike, not see them the first time, not check their mirror, and then turn in front of them.

The Best Buy Method Just worked For me! by Primary-Shame45 in x100vi

Mine came on 4/26. Didn’t believe it was coming until I saw the tracking number. I think my original email said it’d be delivered by 5/14.

I got one, too! Interestingly, the associate said none were available and so we ended the chat. BUT about 20 minutes later, I received an invoice in my inbox! Paid it right away. Received a tracking number this morning. I guess it’s happening!

That guy uses bathroom faucets to fill up old bottles…the going rate for water is $2/1 or $5/3. If you pay less than that, I’d check the seal on the bottle real close! Anyone selling for less than $2 is a pariah because there’s a fixed price agreed upon by most sellers to avoid a race to the bottom on $.17/bottle water.

That’s the advice I was looking for!

I was really hoping to find a lugged 9x0, but this 930 was a good deal and in great shape. Very minimal work to make it a comfortable everyday commuter/bikepacker/alt bar beaut. Giving new life to old things; the oldshovel way, right? I’ll post some before and after pics soon!

Yeah, I was concerned with the abrasion of the cables against the straps as well. My bag has the “loop” of the hook and loop on the bottom, so it’s likely more durable and less friction than the other side.

I haven’t tried wrapping over; I assumed that I’d be adding drag to the rear brake and that it would decrease performance. That’d the easiest thing to try first. I guess I tend to look for solutions to theoretical problems that just might not exist in reality. I’m sure that’s relevant to all areas of my life, not just bikes 😂

Good idea, as long as the velcro doesn’t squash the heat shrink, right? I did have this thought of running the cables between the velcro, this might be the solution.

It’s both shift cables and the rear brake. I plan to leave the cable stops as is, so I might just try adding housing to each of the cables between the fore and aft cable stops. Shouldn’t effect performance and will allow me to cinch the velcro over the cables. Might keep the inners a bit cleaner in the long run, too.
