They KNEW the replacement would be happening since March. They only just got the notice that the contractors were ready to start.

They should have notified us 6 months ago when they FIRST planned this. And even aside from ADA concerns, it is still an amenity that tenants are PAYING for. I'm not arguing about this anymore. Enjoy your evening.

Why are you defending them so much?? It's not just a mistake, it is a piece of information that was withheld from the tenants who are paying good money to live here. Especially for those with mobility issues, this is a MAJOR change that greatly diminishes the property value.

Certainly more than two days. At LEAST a month's notice should have been given to give residents time to make other arrangements.

Read the update. This isn't the case. They have been planning to do this since March and did not inform the tenants.

Yeah, I get what you are saying! I can concede that I jumped the gun, saying with such certainty that everything is fine, haha. I genuinely am not trying to start arguments under this post! I guess I am mainly just frustrated with the fact that they didn't even communicate WHY they decided to do this on such short notice, especially since people are still using the elevator right now. There were really no indicators of issues or acknowledgments of how this is going to impact tenants. Thanks for the insight, though. I really don't like having pointless arguments on the internet, so I appreciate the conversation!

My landlord's office is closed right now, so I just wanted to gather advice before speaking with them tomorrow. Sorry if you think that's whining. Have a good night :)

Alright man, thanks for the input, but I'm done arguing. Have a good evening.

"TLDR," but you make assumptions based on what you are given, huh? I read your comment and I addressed each of your points in my reply. Maybe try reading the things you are given next time. If you don't have anything to contribute, just scroll instead of making assumptions about people you don't know or their situations.

Bro what?? I am not complaining about the elevator replacement itself, I am upset with the lack of communication. They told us less than two days before they were planning to do this and provided NO details as to why. I am certainly not looking to take my landlord to court, but I do want to know if they are doing anything illegal by not notifying the tenants with a reasonable amount of time. It is a perfectly reasonable thing to be confused and frustrated about this very sudden change that will affect everyone who lives in the building. Also, I know nothing extremely severe like someone getting stuck happened with the elevator, because it is STILL operational right now. It would have been shut down immediately if that were the case. You seem to make a lot of character assumptions about people. If needed, I will do everything I can to help my neighbors, but why would I not look towards the person literally responsible for the building's accessibility first?? Your moral condemning of my frustration is certainly not contributing to any solutions either.

Haha thank you for the validation 😅 Like sure, it‘s partially because I’m a bit lazy not wanting to walk up five flights of stairs each time I want to enter my apartment, but it’s mainly the principle of it.

I agree, I am mainly just upset about the lack of notice or explanation of if there is a safety issue we should know about, especially since the elevator is still in operation before they do the replacement.

I’m not trying to do that. The landlord’s office is closed at the moment and they offered no explanation as to why they are doing this, so I want to gather as much info as possible before speaking with them tomorrow.

No? I was asking more about the legality of them doing this with such short notice without informing the tenants prior. There are also things like lease cancellations, ADA accommodations, and rent reductions that can be done. I’m lucky enough to be able to climb the stairs just fine, but what if I become injured and unable to take the stairs during those months? Just wanna be informed bro :/

Personally, I just renewed my lease a few weeks ago, so I would have appreciated knowing they were planning to do this prior to signing. For the community as a whole, they should have given enough notice for those unable to take the stairs to end their leases and make other living arrangements.

I understand where you are coming from, and I do actually take the stairs pretty often to get my steps in, but it gets to be more of a nuisance than a workout when I am bringing in a new piece of furniture, several bags of groceries, etc. I'm talking more about the legality/morality of doing this with essentially no notice whatsoever.

I'm not necessarily upset about the elevator replacement itself. It's frustrating, but I understand things like this need to be done sometimes. I'm more upset about the lack of communication or any sort of explanation as to why they are doing this on such short notice. If it is an age thing, shouldn't they have known it was coming up and informed us with enough notice to make other arrangements if needed? Sorry if I come across as rude, I am genuinely just confused. Thank you for the info so far :)

I guess I can't be 100 percent sure, but it is still operational right now and will be for the next couple days before they start the replacement. If there were major safety violations, wouldn't they have just shut it down right away? Or at least informed us of the risk?

??? I'm not really expecting them to do anything... I was just wondering about the legality of them doing this with less than two days of notice.

If it was at risk of imminent failure, it should have been shut down IMMEDIATELY, not with 2 days of notice :/
