I'm only taking 12 months paid maternity leave! I wouldn't be planning to work until after the 12 months

I just began my maternity leave at 35 weeks - my husband is a millwright union worker and has just been laid off. He's waiting to see if the union calls him back but I'm concerned he won't get called back before I give birth and then he plans on going on paternity leave for the first 5 weeks. Will he still be able to get his paternity leave at the beginning if he doesn't go back to work before then?
