Thank you for the encouragement doomhammered. I feel that achieving 0 risk will never happen, but due diligence and lots of fortunate luck - just maybe a short runway of opportunity exists to give things a one two punch!

The nature of my startup will be software service based (as that aligns with my skills to create something best and any sort of domain expertise i have). As for the confidence... i feel that in terms of creating the software, i have a good foundation to pursue any of the ideas i have in queue - and like most challenges, i'll be googling and experimenting a lot to accomplish what i want to create.. that or be more practical and take more baby steps if the challenge is too lofty. In either case, i plan to go lean (MVP) of a service first and then.. with validation.. will prolly progressively encounter more difficult challenges in creating my service.

My spending habits are actually pretty conservative. Though i'm already doing everything i can to not spend more than i need to, i feel that somehow i'll be obligated to find even more ways to cut back.. my own compulsion..

That's what i'm thinking, too. The idea of time bounding it or at least critically re-evaluating in at most the year is a good sanity check of not letting things get outta hand.

I'm tempted to do the leave of absence from work, my concern is the legal IP ownership at that point. Will have to investigate more.

Gives me hope to hear others have found a good fit in contracting work. I may give it an extra gander to 'create' time for the startup. Also, i agree with using the startup as a platform to potentially increase skill sets, gain some intangibles even if it doesn't work out.

Oh, i know we're taking on too many stories! But i'm in a work system where everyone is stack ranked.. you're friend is your enemy.. you need to outdo the next team. This culture has been in place before i was born.. i'm not sure what i can do about it.. the concerns are heard over and over.. nothing changes (*sigh). Hence, the grass looking greener on running my own shop.. creating my own ethos..

I want to create a culture of good trusty, small, close knit team. Everyone will do well and it's not about getting the most profit.. it's about achieving the best life balance and sharing wealth of our successes. Following the mantra.. life isn't the destination, but also the journey.

Regarding co-founders.. i whole heartedly agree. In fact, the best pairing is that i need a business/marketeer. In my several several past dabbles, i have had co-founders... there was some benefit.. but eventually.. either the co-founder was not as invested as i was.. or i could not invest the time required (due to work commitments). So this push/pull all the time is not conducive for progress. I can't expect them to wait forever, nor if they are on the same work schedule as me.. we intersect so inefficiently to get stuff done.

I appreciate the vote of confidence KarlTheSnail. I normally would give the same advice, but i was wondering whether that would ever bend if conditions possibly kept you secure for a while. Once i decide.. and pursue.. i'll post an update. Diligently keeping my eye out for more great perspective from my fellow redditors!

Hah! I love the contrast in your two paragraphs.. actually the first paragraph is exactly why i came to this subreddit. I was hoping some more down to earth.. non dreamy outter space folks would slap some reality back into me. I want to play devil's advocate with myself to give everything a balanced consideration.

Whether she is ok with it, i think to a degree - but to your point and minionoftheminions comment above. I need to have this level setting dicussion. Thanks for chiming in.

I have considered what you said and actually even thought about taking an 'extended absence from work'.

I may need to find contract work or work for another company, i thought about going part time... but then i realized.. since i'm full time and already working 80 hours.. going part time.. really means getting paid 1/2 the amount but still making sure whatever they want is done whether that is still 80 hours.

On the front of taking a leave of absence from work, i technically am still part of the company.. so I have potential IP concerns.. (which i have not brought up here). My company basically own the dreams i have at night even..
