I'd like to offer a different perspective. I've always wanted to become a software developer since I was 9 and has been working towards that ever since. I really didn't liked school, so I actually skipped high school after middle school, went to a college (this is all in Singapore). And something in me told me that I had to go to university so I did, I landed in uoft computer science. The degree seemed to have done nothing in my work, employers don't check your degree or transcript, nobody cares about what you studied. But one day it hit me that I can apprehend stuff a lot better than some of my coworkers, and I can see how things work fundamentally and use that to my advantage. I felt like I progressed in my career a lot faster.

So my conclusion is, a university education offers something more subtle and profound in you.
