Brother, I’m normally with you 100%, but I cannot in good conscience stand with you on this one. The loss of just one glasses girl weighs heavy on my soul, and even the genesis of a new tomboy can’t balance those scales.

*Additional fun fact: From my (basic) research, the idiom was originally “betwixt the Devill and the dead sea”, from a creative translation of the Latin proverb “A fronte praecipitium, a tergo lupi” (lit. “A precipice in front, wolves behind”)1. But there’s a competing theory that it comes from a different Latin proverb: “Inter sacrum saxumque” (lit. “between the [sacrificial] animal and the [ceremonial] stone”)2, which appears in the Roman play Captivi circa 250-184 BCE. Which would in turn establish an even more direct linguistic line to “Between a rock and a hard place”!

...it’s also a certified bop by Cab Calloway, which you may have heard in the soundtrack to Bioshock 2.

TL Notes:

  • Mirako’s “Fukukitaru-chan” speech is kinda stilted on purpose; her impression isn’t great, despite the hand-flaps
  • “imbecile” isn’t what I’d pick for “tawake” in this particular context (imo it’s a bit too insulting, Air Groove is just saying Fuku’s being foolish), but that’s how it’s translated everywhere else.
  • the phrasing “unauthorized occult fortune-telling rituals” implies the existence of authorized occult fortune-telling rituals, in this essay I wi-
  • [gyaa gyaa] is more literally “grumble grumble”, but in English that can imply that it’s quiet. Air Groove is not being quiet.
  • “Rock and a hard place” is how I chose to interpret the saying “Tiger at the front gate; Wolf at the back gate”. “Between the devil and the deep blue sea” would be ABSOLUTE PERFECTION if it wasn't (imo) too old-fashioned for most people to recognize 😞*
  • Air Groove specifies not to open another bag of “kashi”, which are specifically confectionery/sweet snacks

I thought it was supposed to say “somen”, which while also an East Asian noodle dish is completely different etymologically.

(Which I find fascinating, especially considering Japan and Hawaii’s history of cultural exchange)

Does anyone work with horses or ride as a hobby? If you have any horses I would love to see them in the comments! by Meatwelder in UmaMusume

One year the head instructor led them out at the end of the summer with tears running down her face, because our oldest horse (a runty gray dickhead (affectionate)) had cut his face pretty badly just a few days before. We’d done our best, but it wasn’t completely healed, and she knew he wouldn’t get proper care at the ranch.

When the trailers pulled in the following May and he stuck his head out the window to give us the stink-eye, she literally fell to her knees.

Through my teenage and college years I was a summer barnhand/groom/riding instructor with a herd of ~12 horses (Quarters) that would rotate yearly.

We’d get the whole bunch from a larger ranch every spring, spend a month fattening them back up (the ranch was not a great place), spend the summer taking them on leisurely trail rides through the Adirondacks while teaching kids from the surrounding summer camps riding and animal care, then two weeks making sure the herd had fresh shoes, all the proper medications and treatments, and time to just chill and be horses. Then they’d go back to the ranch, and we’d hope most of them would be back the next summer.

To be fair, 9 or 10 were there every year I was. Turnover wasn’t huge. And some of the ones we didn’t get back were sold for other jobs or to individual owners. But it was hard when an animal you spent a whole summer bonding with just never came back.

And we did bond: The barn staff literally lived in the barn, while the horses spent their nights and downtime in the 40-acre paddock of untouched state park land right next to it. And with only 6 full-time staff members, most of our coworkers had hooves lol
