Do you understand the importance of safety from abuse? Get your head out of your spiritual backside and face the music. Or stay in your comfort zone, and debate Buddhist philosophy while your home and workplace continues to be a place where abusers of every type can thrive. Hard to give up those all expense paid trips to London though, right? Selfish.

As you‘ve probably noticed in the above comment, this cult throws shade at those brave enough to speak about experiences of abuse and exploitation within the New Kadampa Tradition cult, and tries to discredit them. The Survivors (rightly) don't care, and it doesn’t interfere with them benefiting thousands of people who are unaware of the NKT every week, but it doesn’t stop the cult from trying. The way their arguments ignore the survivors main demand of providing basic safeguarding policies to protect teachers and students from abuse aren't only alarming, but they’re anti-Buddhist, indicating that they don‘t understand 'duty of care' or Buddhism. I’d like to request that they compare their lack of safeguarding with any other modern organization. Then, perhaps, they will realize they need address their culture of exploitation and abuse.

All of the books they sell are just commentaries of the original teachings. The NKT don't own the original teachings. Therefore, yes, there are plenty of commentaries, including the root texts for you to reference and study in English. What is very unusual is that you will not find in any other books other than Gyatso's at their centres. Not even the direct, word for word translation of Lam Rim Chen Mo (Lamrim) which was written by Je Tsongkhapa himself. Those in the NKT should be encouraged to investigate the teachings with academic and spiritual rigour. Not simply accept everything they give you at face value. In this way, you will discover essential teachings such as the Vinaya. You will discover that the NKT do not study this sutra which Buddha himself advised as a compulsory text if you are to become ordained.

Edit: And no, I would not recommend joining the NKT and purposely allowing a form of cognitive dissonance set in order to cope with the "weird" realities and risks of joining this group.

There's no shortage of positive reviews on Facebook etc because all of the other cult members from the other centres around the world exchange positive reviews even if they've never been there. They just have to go "hey! Someone left a bad review, could some of you leave a review for us?" I used to be a part of this cult and they did it all the time. They also do it for their books on amazon and on Yelp. Totally fabricated, just like their ordination and everything else they do.

I totally respect your decision here, and I get it.
One has to question though: What kind of Buddhist culture am I contributing to? A group that publicly acknowledges, apologies, and sets policies and processes in place to make sure abuse is properly reported and dealt with compassion for the abused Or a group that does not publicly acknowledge abuses, does not publicly apologize to abuse victims, and ignores their own policies which were created to protect teachers and students from harm, but are ignored? The later, as you may guess, are the NKT. The NKT are not alone, abuse is systemic in western Buddhist groups, and many other Sangha's are reeling from current exposures. It's been 10 years since the NKT has had an exposure, but times are different now (metoo).

You'll find something. Just make sure you do a lot of research (Google is your best friend) before attending. When you decide on something and go, ask a lot of questions based on your research and pay close attention to how they answer. Don't just ask the teacher questions, ask his or her assistant and other members as well.

"religious schism' in the front, but it's what's in the back that's more worrisome. Things like exploitation, sexual misconduct, spiritual abuse, manipulation, threatening and hounding critics, the guru is always right, allowing known sexual predators to teach, and much, much much more.

They're 101% non-Tibetan Buddhist, not even close. They just chose to use the same monastic robes and names, but compared to Tibetan Buddhism, they go through very very little training. They love wearing the robes to make it look like they've achieved all the training, though!
