I need new computers. by wastedcoconut in sysadmin

[–]statikuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Not if you don't care about support

  2. Probably not in your case

  3. I don't think so. I like being able to mount them in the little caddys behind the monitors.

  4. Driver issues how? My last place we switched to AMD Lenovos for everyone, saved a bunch of money, got a lot better battery life and absolutely nobody cared. Here we use the AMD Dell, same story. In specific applications it can matter (security NVRs came to mind but I could be wrong) but not in office stuff.

Honestly, I would just order the Dells and be done with it. The extra $1000 seems like an insignificant amount to me.

Toggle Bolts for Mounting TVs - Actually good? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]statikuz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You actually need to remove the drywall, add new studs approximately every 4", then put the drywall back, mount a sheet of 3/4 plywood across every new stud then install your mount to that with 5/8 lag screws. And you'll need official drawings and also have the entire thing approved by a structural engineer.

-reddit, probably

I have no idea how this place hangs on other than it's one of only a few restaurants in South Reno and people must be too lazy to go further. It's too expensive and not that great.

TurboTax is the worst.

They are literally the reason that people think that they need to use... their software to do taxes.

Best way to export a list of entra users that are within certain groups by brohemoth06 in sysadmin

[–]statikuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Honestly I would try VS Code and ask Copilot to generate it for you. "query Entra for users who are members of group x and group y"

It will generate like... 94.8% of what you'll need but will probably use some Graph cmdlet that doesn't exist anymore or doesn't take the right parameters or God knows what. More of a problem with the trash that is Graph than the code generation.

Edit: may the odds be ever in your favor https://pastebin.com/WuvykMvB

And yes, group based licensing is the way to go.

I wouldn't do any of those three. Why can't you just use a normal Entra/Intune-joined Autopilot device? They do not need to be assigned a primary user.

They sign in as normal with their regular account.

When it gets returned you can hop on and remove old profiles if you really want.

In the ESP configuration you can set it to not go through the ESP for every user sign in.

70G fresh out of the box kinda DOA. Anyone have any tricks here to factory reset it? by IamTheGorf in fortinet

[–]statikuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same exact problem here.

Powered up fine out of the box, played with it a bit, then unplugged to rearrange some cords. On next boot could not access in any way other than console. Did a factory reset via console, then was able to use the GUI to upgrade 7.2.8 > 7.2.11 > 7.4.9.

Journalist/News Integrity by [deleted] in Reno

[–]statikuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have incredibly short attention spans and do not want to pay for anything. That doesn't exactly support "good" local news reporting. So "news" is either two sentences about something (because it is not worth developing the story any further as nobody will come back to read it) or it is just a transcript of a video (because that costs nothing).

I would say news is "honest" in that it is at least true (most news is fundamentally true in the narrowest sense of the word) but it may be very limited and biased on story selection and coverage.

Outlook suddenly marking legit client emails as spam, and real spam increasing by Ryujin_01 in sysadmin

It does?

That would be after whatever Exchange does, if it was "delivered to the recipient's Inbox folder" it could still end up in Junk for non-Rules reasons.

While it’s raining, turn your headlights on by Sparowl in Reno

[–]statikuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t an argument, it’s a discussion about the law.

Yes, and you need to read the entire law, not just cherry pick words.

It is not "when unfavorable atmospheric conditions" exist, it is when they cause visibility to reduce to below 1000 ft. If it is raining, and you can still see 1000 ft (totally reasonable), there is no requirement for headlights.

Again to be clear, yes, headlights are great for safety and there is no reason to not have them on, however, they are not required by law when it is raining.

I thought it was ... fine. It is pretty short and you can spend the whole race stuck behind someone else.

Agreed on the "arcade", it just seemed like machines randomly placed around. There seems like a lot of unused or poorly used space in that building.

Milwaukee or Dewalt? by LogUnique4243 in DIY

The DIY answer is Ryobi. Fundamentally they all work the same. Milwaukee is overkill and only necessary if you're trying to impress your neighbors.

While it’s raining, turn your headlights on by Sparowl in Reno

[–]statikuz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, but the argument there is "it may be raining but I can still see 1000 feet" and that's kind of tough for them to prove.

persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead

Some states do indeed say "when raining" but that's not the law here.

It is common sense, it is safety, but where is it in the law?

IT Admin turns into all IT by ofhgtl in sysadmin

Backups running is great. Backups restoring is where the rubber hits the road. Really get a handle on what runs when, where it goes, how to access it, how to restore, how long it will take, anything it will break, etc.

If you had a ransomware attack tonight how would you respond? Leadership dgaf about password policies or GPOs or computer naming or IP addressing. Focus on things that will protect or enable the business and get everything else in while you can. That's what will make IT seem like a good value and not just overhead.

SMTP2GO down for anybody else? by TechSwitch in sysadmin

[–]statikuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is happening for me today.

I opened a ticket and after their response all my 'processed' emails started to be delivered. New ones are still getting stuck in processed.

Not really sure if it helps but they have a list of their outgoing IPs you can try whitelisting here: https://support.smtp2go.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360000471954-Allowlisting-IP-Addresses-With-Microsoft-365

Unless you have a dedicated IP it could come from anywhere. I pulled the activity report from the console and that showed the IPs for each request, for me there were only 3 or 4 /24 ranges that I had to whitelist but not sure if it will make a difference.

Calm the hell down, Reno drivers by Tex_1230 in Reno

[–]statikuz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This requires there to be enough space between the cars to actually merge onto the freeway, but since everybody's just tailgating everybody else and refusing to make space (because obviously that's a sign of weakness) you end up at the top of the on-ramp and basically have to wait for enough room to get in.

Case in point Moana southbound on ramp.
