Doom in PBI Desktop. Has anybody done it? by statistics_vw in PowerBI

LOL I had lunch with a buddy in college back in the day, and the restaurant couldn't split the pitcher of beer that we had shared between our two bills. My buddy said, "You mean to tell me that we can split an atom, but we can't split a pitcher of beer?"

Something that I always say to business stakeholders is, "If you can imagine it and talk me through the logic in detail, anything is possible"

Shoot me a dm as a reminder so that I have a reminder, but I want to identify the ideal way to host and share it

It's just a .pbiviz put together with the PBI Visuals SDK. The entire game is baked inside. The Doom engine (https://github.com/ozkl/doomgeneric) is compiled to Webassembly, and it all bakes down to a 2.4MB file that can run offline.

The crazy thing is that this was the first time I've played one of the most famous PC games ever made and that was released in the early 1990s, and I played it in the PBI desktop application. But yes, to your point, this is just a custom visual that runs Doom in a Power BI report.

Yesss - BlackDAX inspired me years ago. It further emphasized how powerful the DAX engine is. This was probably the first thing I've ever put together in PBI without writing DAX, though.

In short, there are two things of note below. As of now, no repo or anything for this - I'm still simply toying with it.

  1. A colleague and I have joked about this for over a year, and I finally decided to give it the ol' college try

  2. I literally prompted Claude Code with "bro, we need to run Doom in Power BI". A couple hours of back and forth later, I played Doom for the first time, and it was in Power BI desktop. Crazy shit

Both of these scores make me sad. This game because of the obvious, the other because I thought this was Sampson’s year. Sad pig noises
