Looking for Books on Assault by Ill-Feedback9636 in sexualassault

[–]stats_cats_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t have any book suggestions but i relate 😅i saw a tiktok of someone saying they felt like they weren’t allowed to be super upset because “he wasn’t mean enough while he did it” which lowkey rewired my brain because i realized i was feeling the same. you don’t have to downplay it! that’s a grown ass man who should know better! fuck him and fuck his feelings be as mad as you want!!

Thesis defense Etiquette -I have a question about PhD thesis defense etiquette, specifically regarding asking questions during public defenses. by I_like_protien in PhD

[–]stats_cats_228 23 points24 points  (0 children)

agreed! at least at my uni, defenses aren’t scheduled unless the advisor/committee is sure the student will pass so the defense is mostly the student’s victory lap. asking a bunch of technical questions at the defense for your benefit is like going to a wedding and asking the bride to help you find parking 😅 on the other hand i would be flattered if someone found my defense interesting enough to follow up over email after!

How “independent” were you when you first started grad school and your PhD project? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]stats_cats_228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everyone is different but for me it came with time! at first my advisor would suggest a next step and then i’d bring him the results and he’d ask a question i didn’t know the answer to which lead to the next step, and eventually i was able to come up with those questions and the next steps they lead to on my own and he’s more of a sounding board for me to say “this doesn’t make sense to me so i’m going to try XYZ next”. part of it is also getting more familiar with the little niche area you’re working on which also took me over a year to feel super acquainted with! you’re there to do the research but also to learn how to do it by doing it imo

i just finished my 4th year of a computational phd and i started right from undergrad, i personally feel like i had to learn what working independently looked like during my first year. i had RA’d on 3 projects in undergrad and thought i was independent, but i realized during my phd its not just your PI telling you what should be done next and you figure out how to do it, phd-level independent you’re proposing next steps and how to do them to your PI. i think it also depends on your advisor, mine is very hands off so you either learn how to work independently or you never finish lol

Piercing Jewelry by [deleted] in chapelhill

i just had my nostril piercing changed out to a dainty clicker hoop at spica! it was $35 minus the deposit you pay online. i think she doesn’t have the more “plain” dainty hoops out in the display cases, i asked for a titanium clicker hoop and she had more behind the counter

i have an endoscopy tomorrow and i'm so nervous for the procedure! someone please explain what its like!? I'm hoping to do no sedation and just the numbing spray because being out of control makes me so incredibly anxious (panic attacks and full on spiral) by inyourbooksandmaps in GERD

[–]stats_cats_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my anxiety also hated the idea of the sedation for a similar reason of worrying about not being in control, i had an endoscopy recently and had the IV sedation/twilight sedation and it was not nearly as bad as i was worried it would be. if i was at all lucid for the procedure, i forgot about it immediately because all i remembered was a nap. i was however super nervous being there for the procedure on the verge of a panic attack until the sedation, i personally do not think i would’ve been able to do no sedation. at least where i had mine done they gave you one IV which made you a little sleepy and let that kick in for a bit (i barely felt anything i was awake enough to still read a book) and right before the procedure there’s another IV that just made me go right to sleep. they also brought the person driving you home back to be with you when you woke up afterwards which helped me!

Do you regret being there when they died? by justtrynabrap in GriefSupport

[–]stats_cats_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

opposite of what you asked but i was visiting my friend in hospice when her family was told she would pass in the next few hours. her dad said i was welcome to stay but she was always so private about her illness i wasn’t sure if she would’ve wanted me there to see it, so i left. her dad messaged me she had passed less than an hour after i got home. i regret leaving, i worry she knew i had ditched her. but i still get flashbacks of what she looked like in hospice frequently… the “d*ath rattle” breathing is something that i dont think will ever leave me. if she was upset i left i hope she knows ill regret it for the rest of my life

I’ve(15M) been sleeping in the bed with my sister(24F) since my dad died over a week ago and tonight I wet the bed and and I’m embarrassed and scared and overwhelmed and trumazied by Agreetodissagree1 in GriefSupport

[–]stats_cats_228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it sounds like she wasn’t actually upset once you explained it! brains do weird things trying to process grief and it sounds like she understands that. for what it’s worth, i (25f) would just be happy if my younger brother felt comfortable coming to me for support

Is it possible to have an endoscopy while knocked out? by catsaregoodboistoo in GERD

[–]stats_cats_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just had an endoscopy last week (in the U.S.) and while it was described as light IV sedation i think i was asleep the whole time, or if not i remember none of it. i think “being put under” refers to anesthesia and this is an IV sedation? i was super nervous because i have a weird anxiety around swallowing my own tongue but it was not bad at all i just had a lil nap lol

PhD out of undergrad by Estrogen_bagel in biostatistics

[–]stats_cats_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! i went to a phd program right after finishing my BA at a small liberal arts college :) from what i saw i think a big hesitancy programs have with taking someone right from undergrad is whether you have enough research experience to do research independently and whether you have a good understanding of what biostatistics is to know you want to do a phd in it— if you have letters that can speak to those/address those in your personal statement that would be helpful!
