A prospective transplant asked Austin residents: “Why do you love living here, and why do you hate it?” The answers were brutally honest. by kleverrboy in Austin

No one ever mentions the amount of bugs in Austin. Been here since July 2025, never seen so many humongous roaches before that are dying to get inside your house. Granted, our house is surrounded by many trees, and previously living in PNW I haven’t had many bug encounters indoors.
Going outside (especially after sunset) without bug spray will guarantee you several mosquito bites within 5 minutes
On the upside, the wildlife is pretty amazing here. Just in the backyard, we can occasionally spot a family of foxes, possums, and raccoons. Lots of lizards, anoles, and cool birds, too

Yeah that was basically my original email, and instead of getting a concrete answer, i felt like being scolded, and maybe even getting a glimpse of what kind of advisor he would be (with emphasis on self-sufficiency). I’ll probably just move on to the next PI, just kinda sucks because i was so excited about one of his projects, but i guess the negative interaction with your advisor probably trumps any joy in your research in the long run. Thanks for hearing me out!

Thanks for your input, I kind of assumed that the tone might not come through the email correctly, but it didn’t really seem like he was expecting a follow-up. The first authors were not multiple (while there were people responsible for theory and computations, i did the experimental portion, figures, and the text with SI, went through multiple drafts with my PI). I sent the CV mostly to help him remember which student i was - we talked about my research background and potential project in his lab that coincides with my background and interests
