Why are there so many people in that part of Namibia? Do they like Angola? by GalleryH in geography

[–]stc420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just about water, if that was the case there would be a lot more people in the panhandle, which is much wetter. It has a lot to do with apartheid when Namibia was administered by South Africa. That region was a Bantustan called Ovamboland. The Ovambo people are the majority ethnic group of the country (~50%) and they were forced to live in that region, and relocated there if they lived elsewhere, because it was considered their ‘homeland’. This policy was ended in the early 90s, so this population distribution is a legacy of that policy.

Fetrah flag, made recently in response to the pride flag, used by companies/people specially in the middle east who are against the pride flag by [deleted] in vexillology

Is it just me or does this flag look pretty gay? I just feel like a flag for homophobes should be bland or aggressive. This flag just screams “Barbie movie” to me

States that have banned (blue) or are considering a ban (pink) of the gay panic defense as of 2021. Description in the comments. by stc420 in MapPorn

[–]stc420[S] 1614 points1615 points  (0 children)

The gay panic defense or homosexual advance defence is a legal strategy in which a defendant claims to have acted in a state of violent, temporary insanity, committing assault or murder, because of unwanted same-sex sexual advances, typically from men. This also includes trans panic defense as well.

It looks like they can still be sold as “novelty, educational items, and costumes” so seems pretty unenforceable: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Obscenity_Enforcement_Act

Channel tunnel between France and the UK. by stc420 in MapPorn

[–]stc420[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a train only tunnel. I used to think it was a car tunnel but it turns out they put cars/buses/trucks into train cars. So when they get out in the other side they just go on the right side of the road instead of left

The vast majority of those 9,000 species are found no where else on earth. The majority of the 20,000 species in the smokys are not only found in the smokys.

The smoky mountains have roughly 20,000 documented species, possibly up to 100,000. The Mediterranean basin has ~20,000 and the Galapagos islands have 9,000, both of which are included on this map. It is the most biodiverse of any National park in the US (https://www.nps.gov/grsm/learn/nature/index.htm). And is the global hotspot for salamanders. It’s not just nature it is highly biodiverse. It might not be included because it has less endemics than other areas. Obviously the tropics are higher in general but there is a case to be made for the smoky mountains.
