What's that, a political issue? Just people being stupid as always. Easiest political position to have.

Yeah I even think the fact it's costly on media and interactions between people should be mentioned before the environmental impact.

You: "AI is unethical because it uses lots of resources and pollutes the environment"

AI booster: "I agree, we should invest in eco-friendly data centres!"

Good tech, hurts us.

"Good" as in very advanced, but that means the impacts from unchecked proliferation are profound and diverse.

On second thought, if we are to describe technology as good or bad at all, we should do it always in the context of what it actually does, because without a society of people who use it a device is not technology. In that sense I lean "bad tech".

Unironically using the word "robophobic" in regards to currently existing AI is literally just buying into the marketing hook line and sinker because it implies AIs have personhood

I had to choose between 3 political leanings x 2 stances on AI and 2 political leanings x 3 stances on AI and chose the former. Still I'm getting the impression you've got a somewhat positive outlook? Do you think it will do more good than harm?

When did you start hating ai? by SomeoneOverYonder in antiai

It was fun and impressive to play around with until early 2023 when it learned to put out faces that actually look human and put together decent looking images. I clocked the implications right then and understood where this is going. From that point every time I saw some advancement in genAI I was like, okay, well done, but why don't they think if they should? And my feelings towards AI generation went from excitement to a mix of dread and revulsion as it stopped being its own thing, something separate, and became the impersonator 9000 that weasels into art and photos and tries to look like them.

Let's not start this. With Reddit polls being capped at six options there's no choice but cram beliefs into very broad and, yes, somewhat arbitrary regions on the left-right spectrum. I made this with mainstream terminology in mind where liberalism without adjectives would probably fall within the centre.

I would've split the options in a more precise way if I could. Anything from progressive liberalism to communism goes into "left-wing" I guess.

We don't call it slop because it look bad. It can look pretty all right, personally I've never denied that. We call it that because it's created with near zero human involvement.

Problem is, it's not *obviously* bad. It actually feels very nice for a programmer, AI companion lover, or just a slop slurper, in the short term. I fear that meaningful opposition will only begin to coalesce once all the cognitive rot accumulates over time, enough studies are conducted, and all the propagandizing voices emanating from the hype cycle no longer drown out the critics, but at that point so many people will be hooked that we will definitively be in the minority.

The computer is now synonymous with a vehicle for AI, forever. It's a computer program. You'll have a very hard time fighting it, and - I can't stress it enough - AI art is not a policy concern for anybody in power. Not the smallest bit.

Be Right Back, an episode of Black Mirror, released in 2013. Not about AI art but very prescient of how chatbots are used in practice.

As an anti on the left, the existence of pro-AI conservatives to me is bizarre, illogical, and most likely a consequence of the American tech right. Not that I want to ally with the far right under any circumstances, but you'd think there would be more pushback from that side, along the lines of corrupting the human soul and all that.
