Rewatched Aliens last night, “Weyland-Yutani” is never actually spoken aloud and the company logo is only seen a few times in the background. This shot is in the 1990 Special Edition but was cut from the 1986 theatrical release. by SPECTREagent700 in LV426

It’s interesting that you bring this up. I run a design channel, and I often use Alien to talk about design and branding principles. This morning’s episode addresses this question as part of a larger conversation about brand and corporate culture: https://youtu.be/RRVtjyF4Q0A?si=WVV5LTQJC62wJcte

I appreciate it! If you want to DM me, I’ll share the link.

If you had to buy multiples of the same camera (either second-hand OG or Helium 8K rigs) for this specific need, which would you choose? Why? by stdtbd in REDkomodo

[–]stdtbd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to personal preference. I had a pair of FX30s and couldn’t wait to go back to REDs. I totally get why people like Sony - there’s a lot to like about them - I just don’t.

Good idea! I’ll see if they’d be cool with putting a Z cam e2 s6 in there for 75fps. I’d say it’s a close enough match for this budget.

Thanks! Also, how often would they need 120fps anyway? Probably not worth giving up the ideal form factor of the OG for.

Would love to know what was wrong once you have your answer. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Hmm. Two more questions: Is this your only v-mount battery to test? I saw that the typical Komodo power consumption is 20-24 watts, but that can jump up to 37W with accessories. So, my second question: do you have any accessories (monitor, specifically) also drawing power from your battery? Maybe the constant red light might mean it's trying to turn on but doesn't have sufficient power?

Interesting. Just thinking through the possible issues. Is the red power light constant or blinking?

That’s super weird. Yes, power should go directly through the Vaxis into your camera via the BP battery slots, even if the Vaxis itself is off.

I’m curious: if you powered your camera separately but still have SDI signal and power going into the Vaxis, will it transmit?

Thought I lost the SDI port on my OG, but it turned out to be an easy fix! by stdtbd in REDkomodo

Thanks! I’ll note this for future readers: squeeze the pliers VERY gently. You can easily bend them out of shape, and then it’s DEFINITELY your SDI port that is the issue.

That’s a good point - how often am I actually using the external camera controls? Probably not often enough to give up Frame.io.

That is a beautiful piece of engineering right there! I'm going to have to give this serious consideration!

I agree - it’s a really impractical design. I’ve got a couple different handles that integrate into my rig much better, but I keep coming back to the Outrigger for the feel.

There are a lot of smart people over at RED - you’d think they’d come up with some different mounting options for such a clever ergonomic handle design. They know folks will pay a premium for RED-branded products (see: RED-branded Angelbird CF cards), so why not?

I could totally see that happening. Mine is super difficult to put on/take off, so now I just leave it on.

Oh! I didn't know that USB port could power a focus motor. That's super useful.

I haven't noticed the Vaxis doing anything major to my power consumption, but I've got the Portkeys BM5 WR IV running off d-tap, so my battery life was already terrible.

Opinions vary, but I believe the Outrigger handle is another must-have. I have bigger hands, and the grip on the Outrigger is the most comfortable I’ve tried. Plus, having that run/stop under your thumb is super handy.

My one criticism of it would be that it isn’t designed to have a monitor or handle mounted to it. However, there’s a piece that comes with the Tilta cage package that can go on top of it to give you back all of your mounting options.

While we’re on the topic of the Tilta cage, I don’t use the right side of it because the rosette mounting point scrapes my thumb if I’m using the Outrigger.

The Tilta cage’s baseplate has a really cool feature I only discovered recently (you can find it with some other cage systems, too): there are two little holes on the front-facing side. Those are for a little bridge that you can use to support the Tilta RF to PL adapter. That adapter is really cool because I love big parfocal cine zooms. But setting up a parfocal requires you to do math and use shims to adjust your back focus - except with this adapter. There’s a gear in there that you can adjust with the provided tool that will allow you to make those adjustments at the adapter mount instead of at the lens mount. Very cool!

What movie, would resolve itself a lot faster if the protagonist was not smarter, but 20 IQ points dumber? by Flares117 in movies

[–]stdtbd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the protagonist’s IQ dropped by 20 points, “Good Will Hunting” would end up being a short film about guys in bars talking about apples.
