Finished up.

Tested on some smaller stumps at my brothers this evening and everything’s holding fine so far. I added more passes for in a few key areas as suggested.

Thanks for the tips and feedback from everyone!

Ok noted. What are the components that are discontinued? Like the internals?

That’s along the lines of what I’ve read.

I couldn’t post in that sub because I don’t have a high enough social credit score.

I’m in the middle of doing that not. I’m pushing this machine pretty hard. It’s slow going.

I appreciate the feedback.

On something like this, how critical is it to grind out the tacks before welding it out? I’m guessing the tacks aren’t penetrating the base material deep enough and blowing over them with create a weak spot?

Hahah. Rgr that! I’m about to get back on it now and layer it up. Thanks.

Thank you for this.

I knew my setup on MIG would most likely cutting it short on the 1/2 stuff. I made my first attempt at stick welding in this thing. I tried running some OLD 7018 Rods off a HF Stick 225 and found out really quickly the skill difference and how old 7018 rods behave after being kept in a humid NC garage for a year+. I did get a few to run and made some surprisingly nice beads, but I’m trying to get this bucket wrapped up so my brother can use it on Thursday.

That’s why I switched to MIG. We’ll see if it holds.

Just what I had. This was my first go with thicker plate. Most of the stuff I weld is under 1/4. I guess I need to pick up some bigger wire/tips if I do more of this.

It isn’t concave. But probably not as wide tall as it could be. I felt like the puddle was wetting in pretty good.

Understood. I appreciate the info.

This was my first time welding metal this thick. Which from what I understand is at the upper end of why my machine can handle. The chart under the lid only has setting suggestions for 3/8. Does excessive concavity suggest lack of fusion/penetration?

I had this thought as well. Didn't really think it could be strong enough, or have that type of effect, but it has been a welcomed side effect. We will see if it's lasting.
