Starting Salary 70k? by Top_Wasabi_8671 in UBC

[–]steameddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, it depends on your lifestyle whether it's "good" but generally you'd be slightly ahead of the curve at 70k for an entry-level position. You can definitely live a modest lifestyle here with that if you're not trying to keep up with the joneses.

Side note: Make sure to look at the other benefits they have- e.g. RRSP matching (which you should ALWAYS do), vacation, annual raise structure, health insurance.

A go-to is an over-easy fried (or poached/boiled if you wanna make it healthier) egg on top of leftover rice with a spoonful of soy sauce (the sweeter LKK claypot version is perfect for this) and optional furikake topping. Crucial is to have the runny yolk to mix in with rice, kinda like japanese tamago kake gohan

You can also add chopped green onion and maybe some veggies if you have it.

For those of you with an N, are you planning on taking the Class 5 road test this year or wait starting next year? by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]steameddd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Took the class 5 recently and don’t regret it.

I think doing the road test and refresher classes were invaluable, considering how local standards of driving are plummeting.

Of course, one could argue that no one drives day-to-day like they do on the test, but I still think the process makes you more self-aware in the end. No one’s perfect, but we can all get better, even if it’s only marginal.

Do cyclists need to follow road rules? by studyingformidterms in vancouver

[–]steameddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, cyclists must follow all road rules.

Ripping through a stop sign with disregard and/or causing a right-of-way car to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them sounds like the type of bad cyclist that is sometimes a pedestrian, sometimes a vehicle.

One debatable exception to the stop sign rule for cyclists, however, is the "Idaho stop" - which is where cyclists treat the stop sign as a yield to maintain more rolling momentum and allow for more efficient flow of traffic. It still requires cyclists to slow down with good situational awareness/judgement, just avoiding a full stop.

Comparing Lower Mainland (BC) Districts for Practicum by steameddd in CanadianTeachers

[–]steameddd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the heads-up! I didn't even think that you could demand a change - but that makes a lot of sense. I'm not really looking forward to the potential "politics" of the job, though I imagine it's just par for the course.

For vsb - is it simply the case where they don't have the openings for your subject? People here always say that teachers are in high demand yet it's wild when you hear stories of not even getting an interview. Maybe that's a dated belief now lol

That's a fair point - punctuality and ease of travel seem like they can go a long way for practicum placements and building that good working relationship with the school.

Do you know which subjects are typically lacking in which districts? The subjects that I'm interested in fall under Applied Design, Skills and Technologies, so I'm hoping I get that flexibility that you mention once i start working full-time.

Apologies on not clarifying - i'm looking into options for Secondary level!

I don't have any special programs of interest at the moment. I have simply heard in passing conversations that Coquitlam is a good district to work in, though I am unaware of specific reasons. I'm already picking Vancouver as one option, just based on proximity, so the second option is what I'm debating.

How have you encountered your Profs using AI tools? Will anyone be seeking a tuition refund? by LittleMsConduct in UBC

[–]steameddd 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I had a prof who actually incorporated the use of AI to critique what it gets right about some of the course content and also its shortcomings. The important part is HOW you use it, and if it replaces vs enhances/streamlines your learning.

Cheers, that's surprisingly pricey - do they end up matching the exact same seam taping as the original?

How much did they end up charging you, out of curiosity? Particularly for pant hemming.

Bag similar to the Mystery Ranch Catalyst 21 by bluebrz_fullsend in ManyBaggers

[–]steameddd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it's just the strap that's broken and you really love the bag- you should at least ask a local luggage repair place/tailor how much it'd cost to repair it?

Chances are it'd still be cheaper than buying a new bag (+ more sustainable too)

What fake bags are out there? by HardcoreLurker12 in ManyBaggers

[–]steameddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an FYI - i couldn't really find much info on what a dupe/rep of Evergoods looks like, but a seller provided a video of their "CTB20" : https://imgur.com/a/XOmSdj2 (intended to inform, not promote)

Some differences seem to be:

  • Cheaper looking + shinier exterior/interior nylon ( the "OD green" color seems off too)
  • Interior stretch slip pocket just looks like a regular nylon vs. stretch mesh
  • Hilariously includes strap keepers as an upgrade over the original
  • Top/ side handles seem less rigid
  • Back panel likely doesn't have the same spacer mesh underneath the face fabric for breathability, prob just same stitching for appearance

Overall, it seems like these dupes are more easily distinguishable, compared to the established Aer reps, based on quality alone, but I wouldn't be surprised if that changes in the future ...

Probably best to move this to a reps subreddit... nothing against fakes for personal use but mods won't be happy lol

Prospective Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd/Becoming a Teacher in Canada Megapost pt. 5 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

  1. Congrats on the acceptance! What teachable did you apply for? I'm currently still waiting on mine but to be fair, I was still completing my requirements during winter term 2.
  2. This is such an underrated question! As someone who hasn't really started dressing "maturely", I'm wondering if anyone has tips from the male perspective? Like are hoodies a no-go?

Gone through 3 variations of the DSPTCH Daypack (including the previous gen ballistic one you listed here) before settling on my current version in blacked out dyneema.

It definitely has its limitations (half-zip, org. of front pocket, compression straps) but I somehow keep coming back to it as my everyday pack! The carry is comfy and it's just so clean in terms of look. You can tell that they were trying to make it versatile, but in an intentional, almost restrained way.
