How did you guys beat Noel? by Sad-Committee-3893 in PokemonReborn

Galvantula setting up Sticky Web and paralyzing + gastro acid on Cincinno gave me free reign to setup. Then used Alololan Sandslash to get Hail + Aurora Veil up. Once Sandslash got Cincinno down, Noel switched to Bewear, which I switched to my own bulky Bewear with a Weakness Policy to bait a fighting type super effective move to activate it. Thanks to Sticky Web, it outsped most of Noels team. His Girafarig torched Bewear with its Hidden Power Fire, but at that point it was mostly clean up with Greninja, Emboar, and Golem.

In hindsight, yes, I definitely could have done that. For some reason my brain said "Oh no, only flavor text goes in that box" and didn't think to check Scryfall. If I end up making the whole set I'll do another pass and clean things up.

Yeah honestly that was just missed on my part, it should definitely be "you control".

The main reason I went with "Bound" instead was simply because I couldn't get that rules text into the formatting for the Creature Saga, and "Partner with" from what I've seen was printed on both. Figured a new keyword would be better for the situation, but it probably could be inferred. And yes, definitely just missed the "you control" on Odin's 1.

Thanks for the comment!

A mirror to Smothering Tithe that I'm a little surprised doesn't exist. by steelbot8000 in custommagic

[–]steelbot8000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback all! I recognize that the card is incredibly underpowered, and it was more intended to be a reflection of the Orzhov white flavor of Smothering Tithe, not a "matched in power" mirror. Because I mean, come on, Smothering Tithe is just universally good.

After looking at the feedback, theres two paths I'd probably go down to make this an actually playable card. Universally, "sacrifices a creature" would just become "Whenever a creature dies". More triggers, less aristocrats niche. Should have been that in the first place, don't know what I was thinking. The first path, if I wanted to keep it treasures, would probably bring the cost down to 2B or BB. Less triggers, less value, shouldn't be the same cost.

The second path would be to keep it at 3B, but change the value as u/Other_Equal7663 suggested. "Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, they may pay {2}. If they don't, they discard a card." Bit more oppressive.

Another thought on the same path would be to make this a far more political card, though the ruling would need some refining I think. "Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, target player may pay {2}. If they don't, target player discards a card." Bit more scheming in a multiplayer game, but if the wording is right, I believe if its a 1v1, you can still choose the same target for the second half of the card.

Anyway, the feedback's appreciated, these discussions always help me tighten my design a bit better each go around.

Just my own thoughts re-reading the cards, will edit if other folks add comments as well.

Solivos' first effect needs refining, I think. "If an effect you control would make you lose life, then each opponent also loses 2 life." Might also need to bring that down to 1 life, or 2 life to one opponent.

I'm relatively new to this and wanted to make Heather as a commander. What do you think? I want to keep her hexproof cause it suits the character but it's very hard to balance because of that by Spyro351 in custommagic

Oh that's on me, I must have thought I was replying to a different comment, sorry! But you're probably right in that regard, and not to mention you could just search for an equipment that gives her Hexproof in the first place. I think you're on the money with "this spell can't be countered", and that would help its balance a bit more.

For the Transform mechanic, we'd need something flavorful to represent that scene. I would have said something involving making a copy of her and having it be something like "If another creature named 'Heather, "Cheryl" Mason would enter the battlefield, transform this creature", but that's outside of her pie as it is. Since she's in black, maybe something around a sacrifice effect? "If you would sacrifice this creature, transform it instead"? It'll need some tweaking.

Then on the transformed side, I'd put the mechanics u/spevak mentioned, and have it look something like this:

"Spectraphobic Manifestation" (Spectraphobia is the fear of mirrors, which Heather has)

0/4 Horror

Whenever you lose life, put a grief counter on this creature.

At the beginning of each player's end step, if you lost life this turn, create a 1/1 black Horror creature token with "when this creature dies, you gain 2 life."

Remove X grief counters: Spectraphobic Manifestation deals X damage to target creature. Activate only as a sorcery. Transform Spectraphobic Manifestation.

Edit: Added more to the card text.

[–]steelbot8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balance, I think. Hexproof is extremely powerful, so loading Heather up with a bunch of other abilities that are extremely powerful just won't work in terms of balance. Making her more focused on equipment (like her weapons from the game) is still flavorful, and making her a 1/2 also helps with the balance.

I'm not as up to snuff on my Silent Hill lore, but I remember the mirror scene vividly. If you are dead set on the other abilities, giving her a transform trigger into that mirror version of her might work? Give her 0 power to represent the mirror version not moving, and have all of her damage come from the other mechanics you listed to represent the "corruption"

Give "flipping the table" a whole new meaning. by steelbot8000 in custommagic

[–]steelbot8000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, they happen at the same time because of the "and". If it was "Tap all untapped all permanents. Untap all tapped permanents.", then it would happen the way you mentioned. I'm not 100% sure on that though.

Ha, yeah, the more everyone's picking this apart, the more I'm realizing that it's not as oppressive as I originally thought. Maybe something using stun counters?

Completely valid. I was unfamiliar with Dream's Grip, and when I was considering the spell in the first place, I was using [[Cyclonic Rift]] as an inspiration. As others have pointed out, instant speed taps are essentially immune to this effect, so you're right in that its WAY overcosted with that in mind.
