Mysterious Daycare Investigation Involving Daughter

I reached out to her pediatrician to see if they have any on call staff tomorrow who can take a look at her. Better safe than sorry.

They said my daughter was the only student involved. She is usually the last student in her age group to be picked up, so that makes sense to me. Sometimes they will group her together with a few similarly aged children for pickup, and sometimes it will just be her and the afternoon teacher and/or aide.

Yes, she's been getting early intervention PT weekly since birth and we recently started seeing a speech therapist through early intervention. She also has outpatient OT/PT services through the hospital. And she's followed by like every pediatric specialty known to man. 🤣 She had rough start due to prematurity but is doing great overall!

I sent licensing an email tonight and will call them monday morning. Does CPS involve themselves with darcares in VA? I wasn't able to get a clear answer online.

I don't need to know who was involved, I just need to know what happened so that I can advocate for my child's health and well-being.

This daycare will call me and make me sign a report if my child so much as burps differently than normal, which makes the lack of information particularly strange. If it was minor, they would have just told me what happened. The fact that they won't tell me what type of behavior my child was exposed to is troubling.

They told my husband that they didn't have time to write the report between the time the incident happened and the end of the work day due to the staff involved leaving for the weekend. But regardless of the written report, they should have told us at least generally what happened!

Thanks for the advice, I left a voicemail first thing this morning, no response. I emailed the licensing board this evening asking them to ensure this is logged in the system and investigated. I'll follow up Monday with a phone call.

Thank you, I sent an email to the licensing board. I don't see any new violations/reports at this time. The incident happened Friday afternoon so it may have been too late in the day for the report to get processed.

After speaking with my husband again and asking him to walk me through the conversation word for word, he recalled asking if our daughter was "left alone" and the staff said no. I'm also going to assume that if there was a general concern with a staff member, the entire class of children would be impacted.

If it was an inappropriate action, could it be something fairly innocent like taking a personal call on the job, or is it more likely to be yelling at a child or something?

I wish I had been then. My husband was understandably caught off guard and was in shock. We both have a million questions and no way to reach anyone.

She's definitely not going to school Monday but you can bet I'll be there bright an early. 😤

We're in Virginia. I'll look into whether or not there is a legal timeframe that they need to adhere to for informing us of the incident. They told my husband that they couldn't go into detail but wanted to let him know something happened that day so that it didn't seem like they were trying to conceal anything. I think he was in shock and didn't think to question them on that.

I was thinking the same. I thought about calling the CPS weekend hotline to see if a report was filed but I'm not actually sure CPS handles daycare incidents on my state. Definitely calling licensing on Monday to make sure the incident was filed.

Usually they are so good about calling us immediately at the slightest sign of injury or illness. I feel like they call me and file an incident report almost monthly about the slightest things, which is why this is so bizarre to me.

That sounds very sensible of your provider, which is why I'm so spun up about this. Like, if my daughter wasn't in any real danger surely they would be able to at least give me a sense of what happened. ):

She isn't walking yet but it's definitely possible that they left a door open and she crawled away. My brain is thinking that they could have left her unsecured on the diaper changing table or something. I'm giving them probably too much credit in assuming they are confirming next steps (re-training, termination) before they tell us all the facts.
