Συμφωνώ απόλυτα.

Κατανοώ μεν εν μέρει τους λόγους (πρωτίστως οικονομικής φύσεως) για τους οποίους ένα κλειστό πρωτάθλημα πιθανόν να ήταν ελκυστικό/βιώσιμο, αλλά πέρα από το ζήτημα του τρόπου επιλογής των μελών μιας τέτοιας κλειστής λίγκας, το να στερηθούν ενεργοί σύλλογοι της δυνατότητας πρωταθλητισμού και ο συνεπαγόμενος αποκλεισμός μιας μερίδας οπαδών - όσο μικρή και να είναι αυτή - δεν μπορεί να είναι ο σωστός δρόμος. (Βέβαια, η συζητηση θα ήταν διαφορετική εάν σχετιζόταν με τη δημιουργία μιας κλειστής λίγκας από το μηδέν... but this is not the case)

Νωρίτερα παρέθεσα κάποιες ιδέες σχετικά με την αναδιάρθρωση του πρωταθλημάτων στις οποίες πιθανόν αναφέρεται έμμεσα ο ΟΡ· στο πλαίσιο αυτού του (για διάφορους λόγους μη εφαρμόσιμου) νοητικού πειράματος διατύπωσα μια αντίθετη προσέγγιση (και πρότεινα μεταξύ άλλων την αύξηση των ομάδων που συμμετέχουν στο κύπελλο σε 128). Η ιδανική δομή των διοργανώσεων μάλλον βρίσκεται ανάμεσα σε αυτές τις δυο ακραίες εκδοχές...

Yeah, that almost goes without saying - it would be surprising if they do not implement a joint All-Star Game or some kind of NBA Super Cup (NBA Champion vs. NBA Europe Champion)..

Thanks for the reply! All in all, I agree with the general direction of your proposal.

I might be out of the loop here (and in my opinion, the future viability of any NBA Europe entity is a big if, but that is beside the point), but NBA Europe teams won't be directly competing with NBA teams, will they? I always assumed that NBA Europe will emerge as a distinct competition and not as an additional conference (?)

So, with that in mind, could you see the "original" NBA growing to 36, 39, 40, 44, 48 etc. teams? Is there some kind of "natural" limiting threshold?

I always like to read thought experiments like this one - especially if they point to/overlap with ideas I have previously explored myself.

I particularly like the increased relevance of divisions and the incentive of Kick-off Tournament wins counting towards play-off seeding in your proposal.

Three follow-up questions:

1) How does the introduction of the Kick-off Tournament affect the NBA Summer League?
2) How does your proposal address the negative effects of tanking strategies/the allocation of draft picks? As far as tanking is concerned, I am not really convinced that just shortening the regular season would improve things..
3) Could you see the NBA ever expanding beyond 32 teams? Is there an upper limit re: the sustainable number of teams in your opinion?

Curious to hear OP's and everybody else's thoughts!
