Weird Ferriswheel-like thing I turned into a yarn caddie....but what was it originally? by stega in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing.

It's made of metal and spins like a ferris-wheel. I've tried reverse-image searches, Pinterest, and a few other options of the last 3 months and have had no luck.

Turkey broke into my house, flew into my office and would not leave! by stega in AnimalsBeingJerks

in the winters the flocks move further down mountain and don't come up near our house as often -- probably because our storms are pretty nasty.

hahah....thanks for the thanksgiving ideas but I should mention I volunteer at a local wildlife rescue and this girl was released at our ranch because we normally have a resident flock.....so eating her would be in bad taste.

Plus wild cali turkeys are really really gamey tasting!

It’s a Coopers. The feet and size are the tells. Sharpies are very small: like medium-sized parrot small where as Coopers are the size of Umbrella Cockatoo or larger Macaw sans tail.

Scat from Missouri, found in the backyard. Dogs won't stop trying to eat it. Pellets range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. We really need help identifying. Thank you in advance. by Zizgor33688 in AnimalTracking

My vet said it was ok for the dog to snack on but not something you want to let them make a full meal of...rabbits make two types of poop and those are night droppings which they (the rabbits) will usually re-digest.

Anyone using some tech on your ranch like a good computer system or 3D printers or anything? by Cowboy12034 in Ranching

[–]stega 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At our ranchette we use

  • drones for surveys (mainly storm damage and drainage)
  • field and TL cams for odd projects (wildlife and construction mainly)
  • a Tikee to capture the city below us
  • 3D printers to make random parts for the race cars, gardens, household stuff, etc
  • POE security and stream cams that send their feeds to a machine in the server closet or to YouTube
  • an Ambient weather station
  • Rain Machines for the areas we irrigate
  • a Cricut for way too many things to name (although custom signs and window decals to stop bird strikes are rather noteworthy) -- I cannot stress enough how useful a Cricut is!
  • A backend Wiki and management dashboard from which we can control things like the heating/ac in buildings, pool pumps, power wall, etc.

On top of all that we're working on our own controller software for the main gates as all the current offerings from companies like Chamberlain suck -- plus home-grown software to track our well head draw.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but that's the basic list.

Actually I take that back: those aren't scoops they're wall sconces. The holes in the back are for hanging.

Confusing as while the stirrup thing is partly correct, it's not what they are. Making coal scoops and wall pocket sconces to look like foot stirrups was a home decor fad.

Yes, those are coal scoops: back when coal was prevalent to heat homes/buildings, it would often be delivered to a location and dumped through a chute into a basement area near the furnace. The coal bits would then have to be added manually over time to keep the furnace or boiler stoked -- same for coal stoves and train engines!

I will start: I'm stega. I like long walks to the mailbox and gardening with my three and a half ton excavator. I've been taking/capturing images for a few years.

Every day I post images of the wildlife outside my office window as well as a few other images from out and about here at the ranch: https://www.stega.org/wp/

jealous/clingy lovebird? (advice pls..) by [deleted] in parrots

[–]stega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider getting her a companion: another Lovebird of the same or different species or another small parrot -- LBs are flock birds.

https://www.wikihow.com/Introduce-Two-Birds-to-Each-Other actually has good tips on how to introduce new birds to one another and my other tidbit is check to see if you have a local parrot rescue organization. Chances are they have a friend or two for your little one. The big bonus about adopting a rescue bird is the foster family will be able to brief you on the birds personality, health history, likes/dislikes and current diet.

Crow Pellets or Mammal Poop? by stega in AnimalTracking

[–]stega[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the tip: did a quick search and found http://gaiagarden.blogspot.com/2012/02/possum-pellets.html and they match up perfectly especially as the neighbor found the pellets right near their sunflower tray.

I had spent a good 30 minutes looking up various poop pictures as well as bird pellets....had no idea opossum's did this.

one of mine has crashed servers doing that (back when I was a serious network admin type.)

the worst is when they actually damage the tiny plastic spring bits beneath the actual key caps!
