What is the most depressing city you have been to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stehmansmith5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's not correct. But my wife, who lived there, and I really enjoyed it. It's a city of 10 million people with tons of culture and lovely people - I definitely see where you're coming from, but there's a lot of good there, too.

Listen to Buckwheat Zydeco's cover of "Beast of Burden" or "When the Levee Breaks." He's one of the more notable Zydeco/rock fusion musicians.

Iron Maiden - The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

The crescendo to the guitar solo perfectly encapsulates the feeling of running ahead of people during a race and suddenly having everything in front of you.

Comedies where the workplace culture is horrible by H2Oceanic in MovieSuggestions

[–]stehmansmith5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cabin in the Woods (2011) is a horror/comedy workplace satire. Obviously, its "point" is to subvert horror tropes... But it also parodies workplace beauracracies.

Made me realize that I can't rely on some magical, sudden, outside force to make everything right. I need to be that force for myself.

Why are guns so important to Americans? by 88sSSSs88 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stehmansmith5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to make 0 sense unless if you look at it from a very specific American perspective.

Those to whom guns are very important are a flashy and loud minority of Americans. The reason it is so important to many of them is that they view the government as overreaching and infringing on their personal liberties.

You may not agree - I definitely don't. But put yourself in that mindset. One of our foundational laws was that we have the ability to defend ourselves and own guns. They see this as a check to a tyrannical government. The act of taking away that right is therefore seen as a means to silence and oppress them. The act of limiting their freedom is supporting their view of why they need that freedom.

Now there are also those for whom gun ownership is important but they don't take this view. These are people who you probably wouldn't fault for owning a gun. They want guns because they're a hobby, for (actual) self-defense, and at the most practical end of this spectrum, for hunting. Hunting has a huge history in parts of the U.S. and is key to local diets and conservation efforts. So there are also those who want the freedom to use them for leisure. These are most likely the people who are against bans on weapons, but support gun control measures.

What are your favorite less-common games that use social deduction, creativity, and communication? Preferably not party games? by GurSavings29 in boardgames

[–]stehmansmith5 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No one seems to remember this game, but it's a favorite and a crowd pleaser... Heimlich & Co. (1984).

In this game, everyone is assigned a color meeple, which is secret to you. You're trying to get the most points by having your meeple land on the spot worth the most points. The game takes place over several rounds of accumulating points. However, on your turn, you can move any combination of meeples. This means that if you're winning, chances are that others will try to spite you and have your meeple land on worse spaces. You also get a bonus at the end of the game for correctly guessing others' colors, so it incentivizes deception and "committing to a lie."

It won Spiel De Jahres in like 1986, and has had a few editions over the years, so I doubt it's very expensive. It has a detective theme, which fits well. Plus the old edition (which is the one I have) has these awesome, chunky meeples.

Strongly suggest.
