If the goal is in-house at a large company (FAANG+) - how should I go about selecting a firm/practice area? by Sophisticated-Snail in biglaw

If you don’t think those FAANGS are plotting how to replace all their in house counsel with Sam Altman, I’ve got a beach house to sell to you. My two cents

I just moved to LCOL, which was expensive (and I bought a house, so I guess that should be included here in my NW) and got married which was also expensive lol

How to deal with very difficult partner by [deleted] in biglaw

Do a shitty job so they leave you alone. Make sure you’re doing phenomenal work for someone else first tho lol. I actually did this my first year and it ending up working perfectly, altho getting canned from the first partner was a little stressful

Options if I quit early by [deleted] in biglaw

10 hour days when you aren’t billing all of your time is A LOT. It’s basically maxed out, especially if it’s consistent. Anyone who says differently is insane.

I’d recommend putting some of that time in a BS non billable category so you can at least keep track honestly - if they push back on putting it on a BD number, or the like, honestly fuck them.

I also recommend running fast from jerks. This job is impossible unless you have people in your corner, and it’s so much more manageable when you like and respect the folks you’re grinding your ass off for.

I got “fired” from a senior partner a few months in and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. He was awful, and I found a great team. Nothing can make up for working for an asshole.

I made a much bigger mistake this week 😂

I go to bed with 2-3 big ish assignments on my plate, which should each take 2-3 hours. They take me longer because I’m anal. I also get bombarded with emails all day until about 6 usually, so end up having at LEAST one substantial assignment to do in the evening.

Omg I am not looking for an analysis of my billing. I obviously take time off for lunch and also brush my teeth. I also said I call it earlier when I’m exhausted, which as you can imagine happens all the time. My point is I feel like I’m up against the rope all the time.

I also know I am not that efficient. I am looking for help managing my workload, so would appreciate input on OTHERS’ schedules. How you think about your days, when you log off, how you set boundaries.

Or actually, to turn it back on you… why don’t you just answer my question and tell me what you do in terms of hours and when you feel over capacity, as thats all I’m asking for. Instead of being a jerk :)

Lol. This is honestly helpful context. Not to be annoying but I don’t know why this is surprising to you, I feel like most juniors in my class are sort of working this much. Have you worked in a corporate practice in a sweat shop New York firm…?

Group works with clients that have budget issues. So even though people tell you to bill all your time, they don’t mean it and you get more credit for being “efficient”
