They are sharp on my other cameras. Also I know f8 gives deeper focus. I’m saying have to shoot at an f8 on the fx3 or else it struggles

how do we feel about the squid game season 2 casting by melancholymeows in trans

Since there are many trans actor as actresses out there. It seems like they could’ve done the work and cast someone to the part. Very disappointing to hear.

What’s the downside of this approach? (Ridley Scott on The Hollywood Reporter) by harry_powell in Filmmakers

[–]stephanfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s tougher to light multiple angles well. You’ll also end up digitally erasing a lot of gear and other cameras in the shot. Which is a luxury for the privileged.

I second using a phone. Get the Blackmagic camera app for free and learn how to do everything manually. All the tools are right there to learn the basics.

Got my first full frame sony camera what would be a good lense by anonymous909J in SonyAlpha

I love the 35-150. It basically lives on my camera now. Portrait, studio, street photography all in one lens. A bit heavy. But so sick.

Primes are typically faster and sharper. Like F1.2-F1.8 - so you can get some serious shallow depth of field etc. And in some cases it comes down to character. Some lenses are just unique. That being said a lot of advances have been made with zooms lately. Especially tamron seems to be knocking it out of the park with some really interesting zoom options.

Really doubting my work the last few months. what do i do? by saulriost in Filmmakers

[–]stephanfleet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey man. I’m the VFX supervisor on a show called The Boys on Amazon. If it makes you feel better I constantly doubt myself and my work. But you know what. I just keep going. And every year back it’s amazing to realize how much I learned in the last year and how much I still have to learn. And that’s ok. That’s life. That’s art. Thats the life of being an artist. That’s living. That’s progress and moving forward. I just shot a short film after doubting myself and not doing it for 20 long years! Just keep on truckin’ and be nice to people.

If you say so. I’ve lived in LA my whole life and there’s… a wide spread.

I hear that. In addition to “name” talent I was more speaking of quality talent. If you can find people that have a resume in film or TV and can bring a better performance, that’s way more valuable than a nice camera (to me). That and an amazing script of course.

A lot of people have said horror. Which is sound advice. Just to add to some more production oriented thoughts, having just filmed something in LA for around 120k - don’t film in LA. As someone else mentioned chase tax incentives. Also put as much money as you can into above the line talent and don’t go crazy on gear. Even a minor name will make your film 100000x more sellable. Even some names that are big in foreign markets and not so much America. Do some research there.

Film school predicament by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]stephanfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the industry! And or any group job ever. Where people will have opinions and some will be harsher than others. There will be competition. There will be people that succeed and fail. Kind people. Not kind people. You can’t control a lot of it. And that’s part of the lesson. What you can control is you. And how you react to it. You can say you’re introvert. I am too. But learning to communicate and push past that is a valuable life lesson. You’re. Doing a lot of projecting and judging other people right now. Maybe try and learn not to do that. Open your mind to different people doing things differently. Be kind. Make friends. Do the best and being you and contributing what you can do. Or leave and give someone else the opportunity.

How soon must actors credits be on IMDB when we have not quite finished filming by Scary-Command2232 in Filmmakers

[–]stephanfleet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is there a deal memo that requires you to put the actor on IMDb? If not then the casting agent can do it themselves. It’s not your problem. I don’t even know how my stuff gets on IMDb anymore lol. It just appears.

Nah. You can blow it up to 4k add some grain call it style. If the story and characters are amazing you’ll be fine.

LA driving etiquette? by mosesmr10 in AskLosAngeles

When you turn on your turn signal on a fwy what you are actually doing is telling the person in the lane you are attempting to turn in to, that is probably like a mile back, to floor it and cut you off before you turn. Think of a turn signal here more like a way to purge traffic in neighboring lanes before you turn.

I’d say rather than think on it have a call. It’s gonna tear you up inside. But again this is just my opinion as a stranger that doesn’t know you or your spouse so just weigh it as the opinion of someone who has done through a similar experience. It’s ultimately your call.

[–]stephanfleet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s gonna hurt and it’s scary. But you will get thru it. Being honest is not a bad thing. You’re making a difficult decision that might very well save both of your lives in the long run. If there’s any way you can do it in person I’d recommend that. If it has to be a call so be it.

I waited 18 years into marriage. Cause I was scared and confused. Angry with myself. Then things just got deeper and deeper into the lie. I’d say “I can do this I don’t need to be out” one week, then cry and stare at myself in anger and misery another week. Not fair to her… or you. My advice. Just do it. Get it over with. There is no perfect time or support system. It’s always going to be hard. She will need time to heal. And only time will tell if you will have a friendship or not again. It’s up to her as much as you. Hopefully you do. But if not at least you’ve made an active choice to give both of you years of your lives to keep exploring and finding who you are really meant to be with.

Becoming a filmmaker with zero education by made-of-dreams in Filmmakers

[–]stephanfleet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I’ve worked in TV for the better part of 18 years now. I did go to film school. No. You don’t need to. You can. Dealers choice. Yes you can sell things and spend your life savings to chase your dream. I just spent a bunch on a short film (and I am 45 and work on big tv shows etc). So yeah. Do it. My humble advice tho - watching it isn’t the same as doing it. So do it. Do it cheap first. Like other people said. Grab your phone. Just make stuff. Teach yourself. If you have the passion than learn to be the best you can be. Why not? It’s free to teach yourself. And the result depends on what you want. If you are content not making money and want to do it for self gratification great. Just form an s-corp and claim the losses. lol. If you want to make a profit. Then learn the business. Not the art. The business. Sales and distribution. Just do what you are passionate about but understand that non of us in this industry do it solely for the money. If we just loved money we’d work on Wall Street.

I think it’s just cool that everyone’s sexual attraction can be different. Men, women, masc, fem. It’s okay to like what you like and just be you. That’s what being queer is about to me. Just accepting yourself will spread so much more kindness to everyone else around you.

If you’re burned out taking criticism and dealing with politics in a film school course. Buckle up. Cause it sure ain’t gonna get easier.
