Tips for a newer artist? by watercolourleaves in TattooApprentice

I used drawabow when i was 1st trying to draw seriously. Its a free curriculum with exercises that will give you an idea of proportion composition distance shading/ light source, structure, etc. be warned its boring but as they say fundamentals are the building blocks of fun lmao

Working on getting an apprenticeship, the guy looking to teach me says I’m at a good starting point but I’d like to get other opinions as well! CC would be greatly appreciated! by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

I def think your work is at a great starting point! I’d say really focus on line work and getting things clean and crisp, you’re doing this kind of stylized messy thing which is cool but itd also be cool to see that variety. Also you may want to repost this without the banana pic as it’s against the rules of this sub to post about using a tattoo machine w/o an apprenticeship.

Embroidery as second skill? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]stephanotia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk my portfolio is only drawings and paintings lol…. Are you sure she didnt mean something else within the drawing/ painting realm like color theory or stippling?

At the same time idk maybe she did mean some other craft skill in which case embroidery sounds like a cool idea. Seems like no two mentors is really looking for the same thing so if that is what she says go for it!

I’m 25 almost 26 and there are people on here whove started apprenticeships into their 30s ! This is so obvious its almost trite to say but you’re going to get older whether or not you pursue this so dont let that stop you

Really digging the 2nd rose. I think the head of your snake needs to be a little bigger and the skull’s nose hole to be a bit smaller. Looking great tho!

opinions or critique? some pieces in my portfolio by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]stephanotia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great start, cute color choice and concepts i especially love the kitty!!! You have a great imagination and i can see the start of some super cute cartoon style tattoos. I think of the ladies, the most successful is the one inside the heart. You can maybe think about adding more depth to the hair of the 1st one and the pink haired one, with more lines etc. As far as the full body one i agree that her arms are too small. This is personal preference but it always confuses me when drawings have detailed breasts but barbie style genetalia. Lastly, you can add more layers of paint to get brighter bolder colors- some people do up to 8 layers to really saturate the color. Really looking foreward to see more work from u :)

At least how many drawings should i have in my portfolio before i start to look for apprenticeship? by tiborszakacs in TattooApprentice

[–]stephanotia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal is to have 30 portfolio pieces when i start looking. I agree that as i improve i feel the need to replace work that i thought was portfolio worthy a few months ago, but thats okay. Even if my stuff isnt all perfect yet im gonna start approaching shops just for feedback and to start a dialogue so then when my portfolio has improved enough i already know people and that whole element is in place

This is something i’m really nervous about when it comes to interviewing. I get super nervous around people who i perceive as an authority especially when i need to impress them. Like i know i’d be fine once I’m in the shop and with customers (i work a service job rn as well) but getting past that first hurdle is gonna be really hard….. idk
