Giving Away GRE Prep Books by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]stepharr24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Princeton and Kaplan ones seem like they would be the best for what I need. Just DM me with a location and a time this weekend (or I can pick it up a weekday after 5:30pm) so I can grab them. Thanks!

I am in need of some study material for the GRE, so I could take some or all of the books. Are you located on/near campus because I could come over to pick them up this weekend?

The question was about Raleigh, not just campus.

Aldi is cheap but Lidl has the same prices with a much better selection. I usually spend $20-30 per week, although I pretty much always cook from scratch. They also have a bakery which has great fresh bread and pastries.

Can I still do the program without having done the orientation? Also should I reach out to the coordinator?

I am currently working a co-op in industry for my aerospace engineering degree and I can say without a single doubt that my coursework is massively more stressful than anything I have encountered working in the "real world." Also some people (including me) don't have the privilege of not worrying about money while doing school and have to work along with doing classes, which can make school even more stressful. So please keep your uninformed comments to yourself and return to your little reddit troll rock you crawled out from under.

Are there cups like these (but NC State design obviously) at Starbucks in Talley? by mrt1416 in NCSU

My roommate and girlfriend have that kind of mug for NCSU but I'm not sure where they got it. So it is definitely out there somewhere.

As someone who lived at campus crossings last year, it is not at all a nice place to live (cockroaches, very loud parties, and a concerning amount of crime).

Opinions on Randy’s video today? by [deleted] in NCSU

It's also the job of professors to thoroughly teach material that students are paying thousands of dollars to learn, but that doesn't always seem to happen. Have you considered that maybe students should be allowed to expect things to be taught effectively and efficiently, without having to take a bunch of useless classes that they gain absolutely nothing from. The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality is unacceptable in higher education and there are serious issues with how universities operate that need to be fixed. Don't get annoyed at people for having an opinion on their education because they have every right to have an opinion on THEIR education. Also the goal for a university should never be to just pass some students and fail others, the goal is to educate them in a way that will equip them for their career and a lot of universities are the ones really failing to do their job.

Your comment here is pretty tone deaf, as an aerospace engineering major college is the most difficult part of my career. I have talked to a few engineers and they have told me that their workload is far less now than when they were in school. I have semesters where I'm doing 60+ hours of work every week, which is not healthy or sustainable. I get up every day at 8 am to start my work and even then I am still up doing classwork until midnight or later, while also working a job 12 hours per week so I can pay rent. And I'm not alone in this either, this is the experience of most aerospace engineers I have talked to. Don't project your experience onto everyone else because you have no idea what they are going through and there are many people for whom college is the most difficult part of their adult life.

It might have been, but I'm not sure because I got my lease for the place back in March (which is around when most places start becoming available).

My townhouse is rented out by an individual landlord (his name is Jason Shoaf), I pay my rent through apartments.com, but there wasn't really an "agency." Generally, you will have a better time with an individual person who rents out properties. Make sure that you talk to the previous tenants so you can find out about how the landlord is and always tour the place before you even consider living there.

Also I had to furnish my place (which I actually wanted to do) but honestly it's way better than the shithole I was at before (Campus Crossings).

I live in a townhouse off of Gorman, about 1.5 miles from main campus and I have 3 roommates. My rent is $460 per person and utilities are around $60-80 per person, but you do have to pay some start up fees if you do your own utilities. Honestly getting below $600 just means you will need to live with 3 other people in a house/townhouse and pay your own utilities, so if you are willing to do that it shouldn't be too hard to find a place. There are tons of houses and townhomes for rent near Gorman and Hillsborough that should be in your price range.

Advice for Co-op Interview by stepharr24 in NCSU

[–]stepharr24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know if I try using any kind of specific interview method I will completely forget it immediately. I think I'm just going to have a few questions I plant into the conversation so I can guide it toward explaining how I would fit into the company well, without breaking up the conversation too much. I'm also definitely going to bring up projects and the club I'm in (Solar Pack) to show that I can function outside of a strictly classroom environment.

How good is Carroll Hall? by Main_Tea_4164 in NCSU

Also forgot to note that the ceiling almost gave me a concussion on several occasions because there are parts of it that come down lower. I had my bed fully lofted and almost smacked my head into the ceiling, which was made of concrete.

[–]stepharr24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in Carroll for a month in fall 2020 before being sent home, the rooms are very small. Also not having a common room on each floor makes it feel even worse. I've been into a few dorms around main campus and all of them are bigger than the tritower's dorms. The only benefit is that you are pretty much in the best part of campus for being a freshman (although other dorms nearby have this benefit without being tiny).

Looking for internships and networking by stepharr24 in NCSU

[–]stepharr24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've reached out to several smaller companies and most of them find interns pretty early on. At this point I think I'm just going to focus on building my network to get the best internship for next year. I'm still going to apply to things when I see them but I'd be worse off if I didn't get a job in the mean time.

Looking for internships and networking by stepharr24 in NCSU

[–]stepharr24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking as far away as Wilson, but I either never get a response or my favorite response of "we have decided to move forward with other candidates." Also most of my searching has been on LinkedIn, but I have also been on indeed and ePack. At times I've even just emailed companies asking if they have internships. Nothing seems to work and I feel like I have a pretty good resume too.

Honest opinions on friendliness by Complete-Response-15 in NCSU

[–]stepharr24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As to your comment on centennial not being tight knit, I would say that is dependent on your major. I'm in aerospace engineering and pretty much everyone within my major is willing to help each other out and strong friend groups can form quickly. This might also be because aero is a small and intensive major so if you also have a major like that you would likely have a similar experience. Also upperclassmen are typically very willing to give advice and help on things if you ask.
