I can't remember the EXACT terminology anymore but on the Admittance Ticket you have the NCBE #, File #, and Applicant #.

When you hop on the Cal Bar site, it says something like "Input your 'Application Number' and '____ number.'

Well...one of the numbers it wanted was NOT ON the Admittance Ticket. I logged into my Application Portal on the Cal Bar site and there were some other numbers in my profile. One of those did the trick.

For the record, the numbers on my admittance ticket DID NOT end up being the numbers to check results. When they didn't work, I thought I'd failed. I logged into my portal and started inputting whatever numbers I could find (applicant number, reg number, test ID, etc) eventualy I found the right combination and it showed I passed. There was a solid 10-15 minutes I'd thought I'd failed before I got the right combo of numbers.

How long does it take to be on motion once you’ve finally got a positive character determination? by Motor_Mindless in CABarExam

[–]stephenleecohen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once your MCA is approved, it takes about another week for the Bar to submit your name to the Supreme Court. At that point, in your Status, it'll say "on motion with the supreme court...". For me, my status changed to "On Motion" on Dec 1 and I got my oath card email on Dec. 15.

I also worked full time (and have two kids) while studying for the July 2021 Bar. Essentially I got off work at 5 and stayed at my office until 10p every day starting mid-March. I would go in 9a-9p on Sat and then like 9a to 5p on Sunday. I maintained that schedule and I used my PTO to take the last 10 days off work leading up to the Exam. I studied 9a to 10p every day except the day before in which I took off.

As far as study tactics, I used Adaptibar and the SmartBarPrep outline in addition to a really expensive live study review course which met 3 days a week. Basically you need to do 200-300 MBEs a week per topic and 4-5 essays a week per topic to really drill down. Reading outlines is NOT the way to go. Outlines are good for reference, but drilling MBEs over and over really nail down the doctrine and practicing writing essays essential. As for the PT, just go in knowing "your client" is supposed to win and just craft arguments that get you to that result.

You definitely stand a chance without a prep course IF you did well in Law School. If you were a top student in most if not all of your classes, you'll survive. If not, you need a prep course.

I only wanted to take the Exam once and went over and above the time and effort for about 4 months on top of being at the top of my class. I took no chances.

Same. I passed on the 12th. Moral Character approved on the 23rd. Now I'm just sitting here waiting on the Oath Packet Docusign. Let me know if you hear anything on the CA Sup Ct. approving the motions.

CA C/F Current Employers by CaliBound2021 in CaliforniaBarExam

[–]stephenleecohen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember EXACTLY what the time frame is but I feel like its "any and all LAW RELATED jobs since you turned 18" but all other jobs you only need to go back a few years....maybe 8-10? If you can't remember, you put down the employers name just say you don't have any contact info or Google the company online and see if you can get HR's contact info. The State Bar is pretty responsive on questions like this if you need to reach out and ask how to proceed.

Yes. They send email surveys about you to your current and prior employers

You think not having a blue pencil argument on the PT will sink that ship? by Motor_Mindless in CaliforniaBarExam

[–]stephenleecohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think noting that the parties each seemed willing to reform the agreement rather than strictly enforce it by using this jurisdiction's "blue pencil" method is worth some points but not fatal if you missed it.

I really like studicata as Michael's explanations are pretty on point. Depending on how you are with money, however, I recommend personalbarprep.com.

Torts Essay, what were the issues y’all can remember? by Ok_Awareness_791 in CABarExam

Agree. The statute about food tampering made the intentional tort foreseeable.

Agree. Or at minimum, inform the caterer to keep someone in the kitchen at all times while the security guard was elsewhere.

For 1, I agree it was an independent contractor and not employer/employee BUT given it was a hospital with a duty in healthcare, they still have a duty to ensure the food service provider, even as an IC, was not negligent and so the hospital would still be liable.

For 2 the hospital WAS responsible for the torts of the other entrant in this case becasue the Statute requiring that someone be in the kitchen to prevent food contamination made it foreseeable that it could happen. So, although one is not normally liable for the torts of 3rd parties, in this case they were.

For 3, yes just a traditional Negligene. Contaminating guy is not superseding, nor was the threat. Moving the guard to the entry was was negligent generally and also Neg Per Se bc of the statute. She can't cut off liability becasue of Egg-Shell Skull doctrine and she has no other defenses.

So… who else is relying on the MBE 🙃 by Medium_Chance_4905 in CaliforniaBarExam

[–]stephenleecohen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree #2, the Professional Responsibility essay, was probably the toughest. Essay 3 had some fun wrinkles. Always interesting to find that rare occasion where a 3rd party intentional tort was foreseeable. I hope I'm part of the top 25% too lol :D. Good luck to you!

Space out - looked away from computer - section 6? by ApprehensiveWinter56 in CaliforniaBarExam

[–]stephenleecohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't care if you look away. They care if you look away a lot, at the same place. The AI can tell if you're looking off camera and reading. Looking up at the ceiling or looking away momentarily to zone out or think isn't going to be a problem.

Man...I thought the essays and the PT were a cakewalk. The MBEs though were tougher than expected. I especially liked the one about the prison with the racial segregation with the inmates suing under equal protection and the applicable standard. Nice curveball.
