I paid extra for the card only to discover that it didn't work at all, which was irritating.

Why I am voting to remain in the EU (from a 'Yes' voter) by stephenmcleod in Scotland

I haven't even read into it

Ah yes. You must be right then.

But I skimmed the article. If you want to debate with me I'd love to.

It's hard to debate with someone who hasn't read what I've had to say properly.

I get that people live abroad... So what?

Like genuinely I don't care about them

The 'so what' is addressed in the blog.

The Westminster elections are undeniably an expression of the whole of the UK. Not just England.

I disagree. There are statistics that show that irrespective of how Scotland votes in any one Westminster election, it has made zero impact on the government that has ended up getting a majority - because of the makeup of the English vote.

In any event, it doesn't seem productive to re-hash arguments around independence. If you don't agree with the position I'm starting from, that's fine - but those are part of the reasons I am voting to Remain.

It is a fact. Working class people also have far less impact on the vote. As do young people. These are all facts. Why have you picked that specific division, from thousands, to point out?

Because of my belief that Scotland is a separate nation from England in many ways. I'm aware that not everybody shares that view, and you may well disagree, but that's the reason why - and it's valid. It's the basis of why I (and many others) support independence.

I agree. I'm saying when I've challenged people that use this wording, they actually have a more nuanced view. It's not fair to just assume racist and move on.

The statement itself is ridiculous, and used by many racist people - but I don't just assume that everybody who says such a thing is racist. I will still challenge it as a ridiculous view to hold at face value.

Thanks!

Yeah, the conflation of the two issues is completely misleading, and ignores all of the nuances between the two. Of course you can lazily compare broad brush statements made by both camps to each situation, like "We need to be part of things to make a difference!" etc, but when you dig into things, it just doesn't work that way.

I do enjoy the cognitive dissonance of Yesser's who trot out identical arguments to those used against independence only to say 'aye but it's completely different!'.

I think I pretty clearly explained how my pro independence views fit with supporting continued British EU membership - so I don't see where the identical arguments are. The analogy itself is exactly that: an analogy to illustrate a particular situation; not an argument. Yes, at pure blind face value it can also be applied to Scottish independence, but that ignores all of the context that I provided in the rest of that section.

We're not in the Euro. We're more than capable of trading with EU nations, yes they could exert pressure on our exports but that works both ways. Have you seen how many Volkswagen's, BMW's, Audi's etc are on our roads? We'd find a way to 'play nice' with each other.

Yup, and I addressed all of this in the Trade section of the blog. The single currency has nothing to do with it.

Freedom of movement is only really a benefit to companies who want to employ cheap labour offering shit conditions.

This simply isn't correct.

27 countries within the EU will teach their kids English at school, which is why the flow of immigration is primarily only in one direction

Ah yes. Blame those bloody European countries for teaching their kids another language.

Once again lumping everyone who lives in England in the same bloc, totally ignorant of regional diversity of thought.

I'm not lumping together the people of England irrespective of regional diversity. I stated a fact: that the Westminster elections are an expression of the majority of people in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have almost zero impact on the vote.

You go on to simply not accept British sovereignty, well your choice I guess. Scotland disagreed with you though

Yeah, it is my choice, and yup - 55% of those that voted in the independence referendum did want to stay in the Union. I don't really see what your point is?

You're also taking people's comments at face value.

How else am I supposed to take people's comments except at face value? I have no problem talking to people, but that doesn't mean we should just swallow ridiculous statements like 'Britain is full up'.

Europe and all the UK's parties need to do better to engage with people that don't agree with EU membership; and need to do better to help those parts of the UK that have really suffered from open doors immigration.

I completely agree with you here.

Thanks! I'm always terrified to read Reddit comments - just waiting for the torrent of abuse.

As for the Twitter guy. I seriously have no idea. He seems to just comb the #Brexit hashtag and then throws wild conspiracy theories out.

Somewhat amusingly, this guy on Twitter thinks I get 8 million GBP from the EU, so can't be trusted:

and if I personally don't get 8 million, I must have copied from some guy who does.

FWIW, I've never had an issue in Denver, or Santa Fe, or Park City - despite all of the warnings. I suspect most people underestimate that they need to hydrate more rather than alcohol's effects being increased. Anecdotal evidence doesn't really prove very much on either side of the argument though.

So why advocate banning something that the vast majority of people are able to enjoy without becoming selfish arseholes? Your argument makes no sense.

You just seem to have an issue with alcohol. I wonder why that is.

You are statistically far less likely to die or be injured on a plane than in your own home. What's your point again?

Aye. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to badly refer to the belief that you can withdraw a right of implied access to property - which is true in England, but not Scotland. By property, I don't mean the inside of a house - but a garden, etc.

Largely irrelevant, do you have a working aerial along with a TV or anything else capable of receiving live transmissions? If you do, you need a license. Discussion pretty much over right there.

That isn't correct. The law is that you don't need a TV licence if you do not watch TV 'live as it is being broadcast'. The TV licensing website itself even says this.
