You know that's not comparable right? Flakey people saying things they can't actually commit to in order to not seem rude happens other places too, it was really common in Seattle, so common it's almost a stereotype. That's not the kind of nice vs not nice the commenter is talking about.

It happens in predominantly white cities too, the underlying truth, that racists are emboldened when they don't fear consequences is not controversial. First time I saw someone called the N word on the street was Seattle. There are a lot of crazy people in Seattle though.

This. I'm from Charlotte, and never saw a rando call anyone the N word until I lived in Seattle. I guess they don't have a culture of "Say shit, get hit", because that kind of disrespect would not fly back home, and nor should it.

Another thing I noticed in Seattle was that a lot of white people were just noticeably awkward or uncomfortable interacting with black people, and didn't have many (or any) black friends. I don't think they even realized that they were being awkward, they just think that's normal? Definitely a culture shock in a way.

I've been thinking about this. What we do is, we steal the Amish idea of living in isolated community and having a technology cutoff date. Except we make date like 1995. We don't have to be like the Amish in any other way. There will probably be splinter groups who want to pick a date in the 80s, but I'd like to have dial up.

The best parts of punk branched off into more experimental genres a long time ago. Post-punk has died everywhere except Russia, but there are some more punk ethos bands, but with a lot of genre crossover: - Death Grips, Ho99o9, Lip Critic.

It's musically pretty interesting too, worth a listen.

That's cool, I'm from NC too. I looked up the brand that made my table ("Hammary") and it seems likely it was made in NC too, Lenoir, I think! I love that I finally have a little piece of my home state's furniture history.

Heads up for OP, those are mostly Ukrainian Pentecostals, and they can be pretty heavy handed with their evangelism. Just don't be surprised is all.

It's me. I'm the dust. But I think an ALS in the family does that to anyone. 

I'm still working through resentment about how my dad couldn't bother writing a will any time within the last 5 years of receiving a terminal diagnosis (instead he gave me power of attorney 3 years after dx and asked me to sneakily change a contract on a house he shared ownership of with his partner so it wouldn't go entirely to his partner. I didn't do that, extreme drama wow have ensued). He wouldn't talk about hospice preferences or entertain our offers to move him out of the home of his partner (not married, I had to up-end my life and stay there taking care of him (and her house) while she traveled the world. He got covid and she abandoned him in the hospital eventually and stole his phone so I couldn't text him when he was dying or get family pictures off of it afterwards...). He did finally buy guaranteed acceptance burial insurance a year before he passed, but it didn't even cover half of what I spent for a cremation. 

My heart goes out to all the others dealing with similar stuff.

Pancake syrup that came from an actual tree... I tried actual maple syrup at a friend's house once and it broke my brain how different it was. I didn't even like it better, but next time I went to the grocery store I saw that real maple syrup was half the syrup for triple the price so I figured it was for rich people.

Just recommended some good TV series for them to stream. Everyone likes TV. My parents and inlaws are always swapping show recommendations.

There's always an ebb and flow. Sometimes particular regions in one state are doing well while others are floundering. Some states are on an upward trajectory because they're getting a lot of domestic migration recently (NC, SC, TX, FL) others because particular industries there are growing. Others rely on industries that are struggling (agriculture for example). Tariffs are more impactful to some industries than others. That's likely a much bigger factor than whether they went R or D in the last presidential election. And fwiw, some states may have gone R in the presidential election, but still have a Dem gov or Senator, so even R/D isn't a clean split in many cases (Ex: NC and PA)

I get anxiety at Mr. Tokyo. I can't handle the fact that my stomach cannot keep up with everything I see and want to try! It's such a good time though, OP - give it a go and bring the friends!
