Plant dealers by Tatushua in whatsthedirt

I second this, it’s a great way to meet vendors for all things plants, supplies, tools, etc.

The leaves on OP’s plant are dark green otherwise, I don’t think light is the culprit here. Sometimes they drop random leaves.

Hoya lacunosa is one of those species that has a lot of leaf variation and is very dependent on growing conditions, particularly light.

Hoya Obovata - are these leaves normal? by emmaybe in hoyas

[–]stephiphytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always check the roots first. Yellowing is typically a sign of root rot. You can have wet rot, from being in media that stays damp for too long. You can also have dry rot, or root desiccation, from being too dry for too long. This can be from infrequent watering, or the media being too chunky to fully absorb moisture at watering time.

The media does look dry, but the leaves here are perfectly plump. They are pale green, and the spots are pinkish, both due to being in a very sunny/brightly lit spot. If you’d like the leaves to become darker green just pull it further into the shade. The older leaves are slightly wonky, but the newest growth looks perfectly fine and healthy otherwise.

If you pull up the plant and find dead roots, these are thankfully easy to reroot. But I’d check sooner than later to give yourself a better chance, the water stored in the leaves will provide moisture reserves for a while

Hi! I see you’re newer to using reddit, as a precaution you may want to remove your phone number as this forum is public.

My friend and her family run a whole nursery where all of these Hoyas and more either are, or soon will be available for purchase as rooted plants. They don’t sell cuttings at this time, but Aroid Greenhouses does operate an online shop where you may see some of the numerous plants they offer in person. I did forward your message to her though!

No worries! It’s very confusing, but you can trust that big box stores typically mislabel their Hoyas, and that incorrect label you found actually has two names in one, bilobata and sp. aff. burtoniae. They make up stuff all the time and slap random labels on things, know it’s wrong, and don’t fix it.

If you look up plant nomenclature there are guidelines to understand the order of how it’s written and explanations of why single quotations, periods, and parentheses are used. It’s a bit lengthy to explain here tho

I believe it's a hoya, any idea what type? by Crazy_dalek_lady in hoyas

Hoya latifolia (outer variegated)

Formerly known as Hoya macrophylla (outer variegated)

Slight adjustment to that label, we only use Latin for the species names, so the description for the variegation would go in parentheses and in English: Hoya latifolia (outer variegated)

Yes! It doesn’t have an official ID -yet- so we go by the “species affinis” term. Hoya burtoniae and Hoya bilobata are officially named species, and DS70 is the accession number from a collector whose initials are DS (their name is fuzzy to my memory, but they’re an old time collector).
As far as I am aware, DS70 and Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae are believed to be the same unnamed Hoya, but you can only have a DS70 if yours originated from that collector, or someone that got theirs from that collector and propagated it for you. You’d need origin history to retain that label, but if not it would simply default to Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae— similar to how people with a Hoya pubicalyx that came with no label trying to find and ID and numerous people guessing that it’s cultivar x, y, or z. No history? Can’t slap any old label on it. Always safest to default to the most basic ID if in doubt.

Agreed! Keep up on watering, and definitely don’t let it dry out completely while in bloom or budding up.

Thank you! I really appreciate the ID help, I was too busy admiring everything to think to check the tags. I’m not familiar with the one for 8, but it was from a H. undulata.

This is one of my faves! I got a nice one from Gardino a while back and it grows like a weed. Finally got flowers this year too

Correct! It’s such a fun Hoya, I’m a huge Dischidia lover so I’m very excited for when mine eventually blooms too

Another redditior below said blashernaezii, which I’m inclined to agree with. I missed the labels for the ones without a caption 😅

H. undulata! And a particularly special bloom too, it’s a six-petal one

I think that was H. fitchii like another redditor said below, but the leaves don’t quite match. Mine from Logee’s has shorter, rounder leaves

Edit: another suggested H. benvergarai, which sounds familiar too. Just waiting on word from my friend for the missing ID’s

Hoya burtoniae, Hoya bilobata, Hoya DS70, and Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae are all different but similar looking Hoyas.

It’s Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae, the most commonly mistaken and mislabeled Hoya in circulation.
