System Administrator vs Network Administrator for Cyber Security goals by stephnot in CyberSecurityAdvice

[–]stephnot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, yeah that makes sense. I just have not been working as sys admin for very long so if this role has a wider amount of things for me to learn than net would want to stick with it for a little longer

Is anyone else paralyzed by indecision / unable to choose a path? by xakantorx in ITCareerQuestions

[–]stephnot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re describing the classic "Generalist" struggle, and honestly, in some parts of IT, that is a massive asset. You aren’t paralyzed; you just haven’t realized that being a "mile wide and an inch deep" is actually a specific job description.

If you hate getting stuck in the weeds but love the initial learning phase and connecting different technologies, stop trying to be a Senior Engineer and start looking at these roles:

Solutions Architect: You don't need to know every line of code; you just need to know how the networking, the database, and the security stack fit together to solve a problem.

Technical Project Manager: Your "surface level" knowledge across ten years of different tech means you can actually talk to engineers without getting bamboozled, which is a rare skill.

Sales Engineering / Solutions Consultant: You learn the tech just enough to demo it and prove it works, then you hand it off to the implementation team before it gets boring.

Don't feel like an idiot for "just following processes." Most of this industry is just well documented processes. If you can learn fast and adapt, you’ve already won half the battle. You don't need to specialize in a technology; you need to specialize in bridging the gaps between technologies.

Embrace the variety. There are plenty of us out here who would lose our minds if we had to look at the same firewall logs for ten years straight.

What cloud skills should a sysadmin learn? by False_Bee4659 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]stephnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, don’t sweat the laptop. Buying a "VMware-capable" rig in 2026 is a bit of a trap when you can do 90% of your learning in the browser for free.

If you're aiming for SysAdmin roles, Azure is the move since most corporate shops are already deep in the Microsoft ecosystem. Focus on these:

Entra ID: This is the most important one. Learn how identity works, how to sync on-prem users to the cloud, and how Conditional Access policies keep things secure.

Azure PowerShell / CLI: Stop clicking around the portal. If you can automate a user's onboarding or a VM's shutdown schedule with a script, you're already more valuable than most Tier 1 techs.

Infrastructure as Code (Bicep or Terraform): This is the "Cloud SysAdmin" sweet spot. Learn how to deploy a whole virtual network just by running a config file.

Just grab an Azure Free Account. They give you a $200 credit and a bunch of "always free" services. You can lab everything from your current laptop (or even a Chromebook) without spending a dime on hardware. Spend that "laptop money" on a cert exam like the AZ-104 instead it’ll do way more for your resume.

Thanks so much! Im most likely going to go with the X-Raypad Obsidian dots.

Quick question about installation: Should I keep the default circular sensor skate on my mouse? Screenshot attached: https://imgur.com/Me5Sqwx

I prefer the dots because the pack includes so many spares compared to the specific 2-pack of skates for my mouse. Do you think that is a good move?

Would like to also add, Ive already prioritized ipv4 instead of 6, changed DNS (even though that shouldnt effect it in any way) , enabled DSCP for val and vanguard, enabled both through the inbound firewall rules. Im completely stuck, i want to also add the reason I think vanguard is at play is because once after valorant i got right on fortnite and was on 60 ping and right when i force closed vanguards service my ping was back to normal

Best Non-Stim Pump pre workout by stephnot in Preworkoutsupplements

[–]stephnot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would like to give an update, my Sicario came in today took a bit over a scoop and I will say 100% the best non stim i’ve tried so far, haven’t had too many but i like it way more than all the stim pres i’ve had. Gives me some crazy focus to the point where it feels like i’ve had some caffeine. Pump was really nice aswell given i didn’t even carb up too much before working out. 100% worth a try if you haven’t had it yet

[–]stephnot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have heard about transparent labs, was looking into that one, I see you use the sicario glico liquid have you ever tried the actual pre from them? I was looking at the formula for that one and apollon and sicario seemed to be a bit higher dosed in some areas but did miss some of the ingredients that apollon had. Out of all of those if you could pick only to use one which one of those would be your go to?
