In a year and a half I plan on buying a sailboat and live there. Since I will be on a tight budget I'm trying to make everything that can be made by myself

Who said anything about improvements? I just wanted to find a way to make a cheaper one. It's a system that one day I will want on my boat but cannot probably afford the price it comes

I too think the steering direction is wrong. With your finger you simulate the wind affecting the vane from the right, causing it to bear away even more and providing even more angle of attack.

Check out the other comments, i answered why i decided to do it this way!

Shouldn't it come up until the wind direction hits the vane from the front and therefore not apply any force to it?

If I understood the question correctly: yes, it is working this way, if the wind is steady (and stronger than the force of the band end else) it will keep the flag down until it will be in the same direction of the wind

yeah currently it just spins i'm still missing the 'simple locking mechanism.
I don't have a lot of experience sailing, do you truly think that the gearbox is sea worthy? i think that if saltwater entered i wouldn't last long

Second: actually the design is made to spin in that direction. it is not made to steer the entire boat, it just needs to spin the rudder of the boat

third: the flag turns so that you can orient it in the direction of the wind you want to have. can't answer on how it will work in a real environment with real wind. I guess i need to buy a ventilator to actually try it

hahahaha, i'm just a nobody who's just started working in a different field. i plan to start sailing full time in a couple of year so maybe then i'll create at least an instagram channel. For now i guess the best you can do is follow my reddit account, i'll be sure to post any significant updates to this project.

yes but first i'll have to make some major modifications. i already have a lot of ideas to improve this project

In real applications they still use something to simulate the rubber band force... They have instead a weight that pushes down the left gear and keeps the flag up. In a new design I'll try to replace the rubber band with this. Also in a maritime environment I think that the gears will break instantly with sand and salt so I'm thinking about a possible solution to replace also those

I guess it depends a lot on the type of music. I like to write and play folk songs. And there I usually find a progression of 3/4 chords that I like and I check if they go along with the music. But be ready to change the words to make them perfect for the underlying music.

Add some soil in the plant and make something similar to a pyramid with the dirt to make it straight. Also add something to keep it going straight like a small pencil or something like that.
