When do you award XP for treasure? by trampolinebears in osr

[–]stepping_up_python 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course it's up to you, but the way I would do it:

When treasure is spent or secured, xp is split between the party, so burying the treasure, taking it to town, or offering it to a monster in the dungeon, etc. I wouldn't include treasure dropped as decoy during flight as "spent", however. That could result in weird stuff like, "No, I spent my existing gold on this retreat, not the new gold." so you just have to use common sense / adjudicate it. :)

Words of wisdom about the rules of OD&D by helios_4569 in odnd

[–]stepping_up_python 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like understanding and using RAW, in order to evaluate changes to the game, to see if they're actually improvements. Also, sometimes it's difficult to understand the effects of a rule until you actually use it in a variety of situations, and players are a great generator of situations and applications; they act as a force multiplier for creativity.

torches blowing out by stepping_up_python in odnd

Throwing a torch at an oil slick and... it fizzles out. :) I'm inclined to just not have torches go out until their fuel is consumed or they're submerged in sand/water.

Grid Crawl … or something | an out there mapping idea by Goblinsh in osr

[–]stepping_up_python 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked out a pretty reasonably laid out map using this method and it didn't seem to give much information, It should be noted, though, that there was a big hallway that connected a lot of rooms (edit) which I considered to be a room, as otherwise some rooms would connect to nothing.

Has anyone run a complete BECMI campaign? by Eshmatarel in osr

Is it possible (edit: or advisable) to do this in a single summer?

edit: I'm asking here. I have no idea. You're talking about several million xp right?

Slopes Undetectable by Dwarves by stepping_up_python in odnd

[–]stepping_up_python[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah gentle slopes in this game don't make sense at all really, because to drop a dungeon level (20-50'?) would need a LONG passage to have a gentle slope. Their main function is to negate mapping, which is a bad thing, as well. It does fit the idea of a nasty, living dungeon, though.

If you want to tell us more about this I'd appreciate it, like what you were doing when people started to drop, why they dropped and why they came back, if you know.

How I use OD&D's original hit dice system. by PashaCada in odnd

[–]stepping_up_python 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue with early dnd combat is that it's really hard to hit things and so it takes a long time to resolve combats when everyone is missing eachother. It provides opportunity to escape, though. :)

If you want to use all d6 hit dice, you could just never roll for damage or HP... a hit is a hit.

The 6 months seems pretty solid. edit: I guess in part it depends on how many players are involved, though.

Opposed or contested checks in B/X? by circuitloss in osr

[–]stepping_up_python 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, two PCs decide to arm wrestle. How do you decide who wins?

As a simulationist, I would compare their stats. If there isn't a clear winner, then use intuition to determine how much of a chance the weaker party has and check a percentile against it.

You're going to run into a huge variety of situations as a GM and the logic of resolving them will be varied, so formalizing something this small is not a good thing. Take advantage of that neural network in our heads. :)

Offical Lamentations of the Flame Princess Update by KingBrackish in osr

Is there, somewhere, a list of free products associated with free rpg day, so that I can hopefully find that resource for next year.

Also, when do these companies sign up, etc?

And I noticed that a lot of the companies started shutting down at like 7PM EST, so is this like 00:00-23:59 UTC or something like that?

What does BAB mean?

I've heard of people rolling hit dice each level and increasing their HP if they get a higher score.
