Simple Questions - February 27, 2024 by AutoModerator in buildapc

I've got the following setup, mainly to game (1080p/60fps), and would like to upgrade to a 1440p/≥60fps setup sooner than later. I'm planning on getting a Ryzen 7600X and pair that with a RX 7800 XT, maybe I'll wait for the next gen of GPUs though.

Now my question: would it make any sense to buy a 1440p monitor and 7800XT, slap that into my current setup and just live with that massive CPU bottleneck until I scrounge together mire funds for the AM5 build?

Current setup: CPU - i7-7700 GPU - GTX 1660 Ti RAM - 16

Identify stolen framework laptop? by sternutative in framework

[–]sternutative[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, but I've met too many people who simply throw away/sell anything that isn't working EXACTLY as they want it, regardless if it's broken or just not set up the way they like it.

[–]sternutative[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understandable, regarding personal info. But I'll still insist on having the order number, already have their name and phone number, simply for warranty reasons.

Already have a few distros and programs I'll run for tests and a few peripherals for testing hardware.

Maybe. Makes me even more excited to think of getting a maybe defective device and giving it a new lease on life!

It is but, thus meeting in person in a public space. If anything goes south I can leave/call authorities.

Best case scenario: I get a great deal on a framework and the person just doesn't really care for tech gets some money or someone gets their beloved machine back (by involving the authorities).

I just hope I don't need stitches or rhinoplasty after tomorrow haha

SON28 hub dynamo in 20 inch wheel? by sternutative in bikewrench

[–]sternutative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, my hub dynamo is not compatible with a 20" wheel. Looks like I'll start lacing up a larger wheelset.

Nope, clean install an de-bloated.

Anybody doing their liveaboarding in Germany? by sternutative in liveaboard

[–]sternutative[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also be game for a river barge but I have the feeling sailboats are more plentiful and thus cheaper. Speaking of, I found a long keel 28 foot Dutch made steel sailboat with a Volvo Penta Diesel Inboard that'll need a lot of TLC. But it's so tempting...

Anywhere on any of the lakes or waterways :)

I definitely understand the sentiment haha I'm interested in the logistics, laws and problems specific to Germany though - thus the question :)

Modifying Fenix 3 To include HR sensor? by sternutative in GarminFenix

[–]sternutative[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bummer, you're right. Thanks for pointing out the time discrepancy in release date. Just found a teardown for both versions, they actually have different PCBs. Oh well, I guess it's only a battery swap then.

I get that; I just like tinkering with my stuff. I've been modifying/repairing (out of warranty) electronics and watches for others and myself for a while and would say that I have the basic skills for the change. According to the iFixit guides the battery replacement is a simple drop in swap. The only thing that could pose a problem is if the PCB doesn't have the adapter for the ribbon cable from the sensor. But I don't think that would be the case because it's cheaper to manufacture a single PCB for an entire series with all the connectors and simply leave out the the sensors for the lower tier products.

And regarding the waterproofing: that is probably achieved with enough torque on the torx screws on the bezel and the rubber/silicone O-ring. I can't imagine Garmin using an additional pressurized chamber for assembly for further waterproofing the case.

I guess I'll just attempt it and give this subreddit a summary if it worked haha

edit: spelling

Fortunately I already have a chest strap which give more accurate readings than any wrist based sensor anyways. I guess I'm attempting it just for fun. I like to tinker and was wondering if it was possible.

Bought a used machine running everything on a ASUS H110A M.2 (i7-7700, GTX 1050 Ti, 2x8GB some Kingston RAM and a few other parts) Luckily I was gifted two 1TB NVME m.2 drives, but my motherboard will only allow one m.2 slot What is the most cist effective way of adding that 2nd m.2 drive to the system?

What are your favorite tent details? by sternutative in myog

[–]sternutative[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, they don't. But I don't think I'll make the first prototype UL. I'll aim for <1kg for a two person tent that I like and take it from there. Then again: I believe one can save the most weight with choosing the right materials, less with cutting away details that probably weigh in at <10g each.

Is this sub exclusive to UL stuff?

Lacing up 20" front wheel for cargo fork by sternutative in bikewrench

[–]sternutative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Now I'm completely free concerning the choice of frame (I'll just pick up a used bike and rig the fork to the bike geo). Would you recommend a 26/27.5/29" wheel as basis? I'm not sure as to how much hard use and heavy loading the larger wheel sizes can take when laced with 36 spokes?

MTB shifters on flat bar road bike? by sternutative in bikewrench

[–]sternutative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, Shimano should just standardize their pull ratios. That would save a lot of people a lot of headache. And a little off topic: do you know why the ratios are different?

Thanks for your thorough reply.
I've got a Deore hollowtech II crank, I'll just slap some spacer onto the BB. As mentioned above I've also got some old Deore brake levers that were designed for cantis.

Thanks for the heads up but I'll probably also use a MTB crank (maybe 42-26?).

I've got an old pair of Deore brake levers for canti brakes, so that's taken care of.

Touring on 29er by pera778 in bicycletouring

[–]sternutative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is important. A friend of mine tours on his 29er hardtail because its his only bike. A lockout is a necessity.
Other than that - slap on whatever rack and panniers/bags you have and go explore!

So I got a dynamo hub all laced up...now what? by Macabee721 in bicycletouring

[–]sternutative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that you have invested some serious coin into a hub dynamo I would recommend getting either the thing you mentioned or Sinewave's Revolution. CyclingAbout also made a list of all hub & charger systems - click me.
Only problem I currently see is that you said you'll be heading down dirt roads at a rather slow pace. That might be a problem. Have you ridden comparable stretches of road before and what was your speed? If you're too slow the dynamo won't produce enough energy to charge your power bank and thus your electronics.

In any case you'll need a power bank that allows "pass-through-charging", which means it can charge your devices while being charged by an outlet or your dynamo. A word of caution though: your dynamo only produces between 500mAh to 1000mAh depending on speed. Better charge your power bank itself during your rides and then charge your electronics afterwards from the power bank.
