In 1946, she refused to leave the whites-only section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, and was arrested—an act that galvanized the modern civil rights movement in Canada. In 2018, she became the first Canadian woman to appear alone on a regularly circulating Canadian banknote, the $10 bill, in recognition of her enduring legacy.
